The match is over.
Score: 1-2.

The qualification process for the Euro 2020 competition is reaching its climax with Spain, who currently sit top of Group F, facing off against third placed Romania.

On paper, this should be a slam dunk win for Spain but as the previous qualification games have shown, Romania are far from slouches, and could easily pull off a shock win.

The hosts will go into this game as underdogs despite their decent start to the qualification campaign, picking up seven points from their opening four fixtures.

Spain are steamrollering through the group now, picking up a maximum of 12 points from their opening four games, and will be looking to not only qualify for Euro 2020 but qualify with a perfect record.

Romania lost to Sweden in the opening group game but they managed to come back with a 4-1 win against the Faroe Islands, a draw against Norway and a comfortable win against Malta.

Spain, on the other hand, have been in top form. They beat Norway 2-1 in the opener, before beating Malta 2-0, Faroe Islands 4-1 and Sweden 3-0.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be a big a margin as many suggest. A 3-0 win or a 3-1 win would seem to be the most likely outcome of this one.

Betting Tips

Spain are favourites for this clash so an away win carries little to no risk at all, while it is also highly likely that both teams will score. Romania will give it all they’ve got to get a result out of this game, but Spain’s talent will be too much for them, and this is among the best online betting odds for this round of action. 888sport have a 3-1 Spain win as 11/1

These are good odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect given the two teams and their recent form. Home advantage should significantly help Romania in the outlook of this game and the scoreline being level at the break before Spain make a few subs and pull away in the second half is a likely outcome, rated at 10/3 by 888sport.

Head to Head

These two nations have only ever played each other 16 times with Romania winning five games, Spain also winning five games but the draw being the most common result at six games resulting in even stevens.

  • The first meeting of these two sides was back in the qualifiers for the second European Championships in 1964 when Spain ran out 6-0 winners.
  • The two have only ever met once in competitive tournaments, with Spain running out 1-0 winners in 1996.
  • The last game between these two was back in 2016 when Romania held the Spaniards to a 0-0 draw, extending their unbeaten run to three games.
  • In fact, that unbeaten run stretches back 22 years, with that win in 1996 the last time Spain have beaten Romania. Since then, there have been two draws – in 2016 and in 1997 – and a 1-0 Romania win in 2007.
