The match is over.
Score: 2-3.

The Netherlands and Germany are two of European football’s traditional heavyweights – and two old rivals – and they meet in Euro 2020 qualification action in Amsterdam.

Predictions

Arguably the most talented football nation to never win the World Cup, the Netherlands have three times finished as runners-up – and the first of those times, it was West Germany who took the trophy instead.

The rivalry between Germany and the Netherlands is, historically, about more than football but that 1974 final lives long in Oranje memory and whenever the countries meet on the pitch, each side wants to win that little bit more.

Ronald Koeman is the coach now tasked with guiding the Netherlands to success against Germany – and all other opposition, of course – but the irony is that this is a less talented Dutch side than the generations past. And yet, recent results are some of the national team’s most positive in years – as relevant bookmakers might know to their cost.

That was nowhere better seen than the Nations League, when the Netherlands twice met Germany and avoided defeat both times. They came back from two goals down to draw in Gelsenkirchen in November, while the October meeting, in Amsterdam, ended in a 3-0 Dutch triumph.

Indeed, Germany now haven’t been the Dutch since a Euro 2012 meeting, when two Mario Gomez goals were enough despite Robin Van Persie’s late consolation. Drawn in the same group, Germany won all three of their first stage matches and reached the tournament’s semi-finals, while the Netherlands didn’t win any and crashed out.

This is a different Dutch team though – and Joachim Low has rung the changes for Germany after a disappointing World Cup. It’s a fixture that could genuinely go either way – parity suggests a 2-2 draw.

Betting Tips

There were seven goals in the two Nations League meetings between the Netherlands and Germany and with Die Mannschift in a state of transition – something the Netherlands have been in for a while now – neither team is settled, but both are still talented. Goals should come, and Unibet price over 3.5 of them at 37/20.

On paper Germany do have greater quality in their squad – Timo Werner, Toni Kroos and Serge Gnabry to name just three. But the Dutch are made of sterner stuff these days, and the Germans, despite their ability, perhaps weaker, so a home team comeback isn’t out of the question. Unibet price a Germany half time lead but full time draw at 23/2.
