Score: 1-5.

With England coming off the back of successful World Cup and Nations League campaigns, they will be looking towards Euro 2020 as the next step in their development but a tough away trip to Montenegro is what stands in their way of yet another win.

England should be, at least on paper, the favourites for this game but away trips in this part of Europe is always tough, with this game being no different. Montenegro could be a difficult game but England have enough talent to get through.

Montenegro come into this game as pure underdogs having lost their past two games away against Serbia and at home to Romania.

England are heavy favourites given their talent across the board and come into this game off the back of five games undefeated following their World Cup semi-final loss against Croatia.

England’s run has consisted of wins against Switzerland, Spain, Croatia and the United States, with the only game not being a win was a draw away at Croatia.

Montenegro have only won twice since September of 2017 with both of those wins coming against Lithuania.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be a big a margin as many suggest. A standard 2-0 or 3-0 win for the English will be acceptable and expected.

Betting Tips

England will be seen as clear favourites for this game and an easy win should be in order with a 3-0 triumph not out of the question. Montenegro will be expected to resist England’s attack for only so long and their fans will be there to see a good performance. UniBet have it as 9/1.

These are lengthy odds offered by top bookmakers for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect. England will eventually win this game but it may take them 45 minutes to get accustomed to whatever atmosphere they face and get used to the pitch that will likely be bobbly and hard to pass around on, but in the second half they should improve massively and take the win. Head to Head

England and Montenegro have faced off four times prior to this game with England only ever winning once (a 4-1 win in 2013) with the other three games being draws.

  • The top scorers in this fixture are Wayne Rooney for England and Montenegro’s Dejan Damjanovic, who are tied at the top with two goals each.
  • Three of Montenegro’s last five wins have been at home, with wins over Lithuania, Romania and Armenia all finding it difficult to take wins from them.
  • Excluding the World Cup, England haven’t lost away from home since June 2017 when France beat them 3-2 with Barcelona’s Ousmanne Dembele scoring the winner.
  • England named four players under 21 in their squad for these international fixtures – Trent Alexander-Arnold, Declan Rice, Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi, and only one player over 30 – third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
