The match is over.
Score: 1-4.

Moldova National Stadium. Qualification for Euro 2020 starts this week with World Cup winners France travelling to face lowly Moldova in a game that, really should not be a contest in any way, shape or form but with certain French players perhaps a little fatigued, you can never say never.

This should, and could, be a very easy win for France given their star talent in comparison to Moldova but if there is one thing that this France team can be criticised for, it’s the lack of goals they score which could haunt them here.

Hosts Moldova will come into this game as clear underdogs, and excluding wins against San Marino, they haven’t won a game since beating Andorra in 2016.

With the World Cup hanging above them, France know that nothing short of a monster win will be enough to keep everyone happy, although the only time they’ve scored more than three goals in a game in recent times was against Argentina in the knockout rounds of the World Cup and in the World Cup final against Croatia.

Moldova’s recent losses have come against Kazakhstan and Luxembourg, but have beaten San Marino twice between these two defeats.

The visitors will obviously be favourites for this game but will be looking to make sure they don’t have a repeat of a game against Luxembourg last year, which ended in a 0-0 at home.

While France will be likely winners, a big scoreline is unlikely given the nature of how they play. A maximum of five goals should be expected from this game if they play at top form, without reply.

Betting Tips

France are favourites for obvious reasons so while the odds may seem short on a big victory, it’s for good reason. Didier Deschamps’ side certainly have the quality to rout Moldova, home or away.

While the draw at half time, particularly 0-0, may seem unrealistic it isn’t as out there as you’d expect. It could take the French side a while to warm up and to get their wheels moving but once they click into gear after some stern words from Deschamps at the half time interval, they should come out of the blocks and fire in a few goals.

Head to Head

This will be the first time that these two nations have faced off, with no prior meetings before this qualification campaign.

  • France lost recently against the Netherlands which ended a run of 14 games without defeat.
  • Moldova have never qualified for a major tournament and finished their 2018 World Cup campaign rock bottom without any wins and scoring just four goals.
  • Moldova have two players in Serie A – Vitalie Damascan and Artur Ionita – who play for Torino and Cagliari, while 12 of their squad still play in the Moldovan domestic league.
  • France’s record in European Championships is quite impressive with two wins and one runner up finish which came at their home tournament in 2016 when they lost 1-0 in the final against Portugal, courtesy of a goal from Eder.
