The qualification campaign for the European Championships 2020 gets underway this week with England hosting Czech Republic in a clash between the top two sides in Group A, with the hosts favoured to continue their strong recent form.

England have enjoyed a strong last year thanks to their World Cup run to the semi-finals before qualification for this summer’s Nation League finals.

Gareth Southgate’s side topped a tough group containing Spain and Croatia thanks to dramatic victories in each of their last two games, to give themselves a chance of lifting the inaugural competition.

The Three Lions are heavily fancied to top a favourable group which also contains Bulgaria, Montenegro and Kosovo, with the Czechs tipped to be their toughest opponents.

Czech Republic finished second in their Nations League group – ahead of Slovakia but behind Ukraine – with two victories in their four games, with their form mixed in recent years.

The hosts will be favourites to continue their strong recent form due to possessing home advantage, superior form and quality over the Czech Republic.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 2-1 triumph for England would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Czech Republic have netted at least once in six of their last seven fixtures, while England have only failed to score in two of their last 25 home matches. This is among the best online betting odds for this matchday with both sides stronger in attack than defence.

The Roma forward netted three goals in his four Nations League outings and has been in strong form for his country. He has found game-time at club level limited this season and has found the net just five times in Italian football this campaign, but he could use his international platform to re-find his best form with favourable odds of a goal here.

Head to Head

The last time these two sides met resulted in a 2-2 friendly draw back in August 2008 – when Wes Brown and Joe Cole netted for England. England defeated the Czechs 2-0 in their only ever previous meeting, in 1998.

  • Each of the Czech Republic’s last three matches have ended 1-0 – victories over Slovakia and Poland followed up a defeat to Russia.
  • Now led by Jaroslav Silhavy, the nation have missed out on each of the last three major tournaments, with their last qualification coming for Euro 2012.
  • England are unbeaten across their last 17 home fixtures – a run stretching back to a 1-2 loss at home to the Netherlands in a friendly in March 2016.
  • The Three Lions have won four of their last five matches since their Nations League defeat at home to Spain last September, alongside a 0-0 draw in Croatia.
