Euro 2020 England vs Bulgaria
Team vs Team Euro 2020 qualifiers

The match is over.
Score: 4-0.

The first game for England since the UEFA Nations League disappointment against the Netherlands in the summer, the questions remains over whether or not Gareth Southgate’s men can carry on their good run at home and qualify from this group with ease.

On paper, England should win this game and should have enough to get a win with ease, but sometimes in these qualifiers against teams like Bulgaria, they can always spring a surprise.

England come into this game off the back of two thumping wins in their past two Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro, winning both 5-1.

Bulgaria have played four Euro 2020 qualifying games so far this campaign and have managed to win none of them, losing two and drawing two in the process.

The Bulgarians lost 2-3 to Kosovo and 2-1 to the Czech Republic while opening their campaign with two 1-1 draws, against Kosovo again and Montenegro.

England have only played two games in the group so far but can take solace from the summer after finishing third in the Nations League, beating Switzerland on penalties to take the bronze medal.

England will be strong favourites for this game so a comprehensive win may be the way to go if you’re looking for a full time result bet. A 4-0 or another 5-1 wouldn’t be out of place in this fixture.

Betting Tips

England are overwhelming favourites for this clash so a home win carries very little risk while it is also highly likely that they will put a handful past their opponent. Bulgaria will be intent on giving their travelling fans a moment to savour on their trip to Wembley so they may try to get the odd goal, but this is among the best online betting odds for this round of action. 888sport have the 5-1 win at 28/1.

These are lengthy odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect, mainly considering the gap in talent between the two nations and the recent history of England’s Euro 2020 qualifiers. Home advantage should significantly aid England in this game and the goals to flow should be expected, before taking full advantage in the second half and killing Bulgaria off is a likely outcome, with this bet rated at 33/10by 888sport.

Head to Head

These two nations have only played each other 10 times across their respected histories, but a key element to remember is that England are unbeaten against Bulgaria, winning six games and drawing the other four.

  • The first meeting came in 1962 when the two played out a 0-0 draw with the likes of Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves lining up for England that day.
  • The highest margin of victory in this fixture is 4-0 back in 2010 when a Jermain Defoe hat trick gave England a comprehensive win after their disappointing 2010 World Cup under Fabio Capello.
  • The last draw between these two came in 1999 when Kevin Keegan’s England only managed a 1-1 thanks to an Alan Shearer goal in the 14th minute quickly cancelled out three minutes later by Georgi Markov.
  • The last game was in September of 2011 when England won 3-0 in Bulgaria – who were then coached by Germany legend Lothar Matthaus at the time – under Fabio Capello thanks to a brace from Wayne Rooney and an opener from Gary Cahill.
