The match is over.
Score: 2-1.

The top two in qualification Group A meet in Prague with the hosts aiming for top spot and the visitors looking to maintain their perfect record.

It’s four wins from four for Gareth Southgate’s England so far and having routed the Czechs at Wembley, England can travel with confidence of getting three points.

A similar score line might be more unlikely, with the Czech Republic so far having beaten Bulgaria and Montenegro at home, but Jaroslav Silhavy’s side have too big a gap in quality to bridge. Even with the resolve not to be embarrassed again, England’s extra talent should tell.

Indeed, England have lost only to Spain and the Netherlands, both in the Nations League, since they were beaten to third place at World Cup 2018 by Belgium. It’s a run of 12 games and only two defeats.

The Czech Republic’s recent form is decidedly more mixed, with an understandable defeat to Brazil following the England hammering, and a disappointing reverse in Kosovo denting their Euro 2020 chances.

The pressure then is on Michael Krmencik and Patrick Schick to score the goals when England visit but Silhavy doesn’t have many goalscorers to call on. England, in contrast, have the likes of Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling, two players in good form for their clubs even if results at club level for Tottenham and Manchester City have been inconsistent.

That’s the sort of thing that will make the difference as even if the Czech Republic do score, England will score more – and win 3-1.

Betting Tips

England’s fire power gets the headlines – 19 goals in four games – but they’ve also conceded four in four. That’s not a huge amount but does work out at a goal a game, something the top bookies might not take into account. 888Sport price England to win and BTTS at 11/4.

City forward Sterling has been dangerous all season, even as his club fall behind in the Premier League title race. He scored a hat-trick the last time the countries met, and netted against Bulgaria, Montenegro and Kosovo. Sterling is 17/10 at 888Sport to score again.

Head to Head

Prior to their first qualification meeting, the last time England played the Czech Republic was in a 2008 friendly.

Joe Cole’s late goal salvaged a draw for England after Milan Baros and Marek Jankulovski scored either side of Wes Brown.

  • England haven’t lost in their last 43 qualifiers, dating back to 2009.
  • Six points from their two games this week will see England qualify for Euro 2020.
  • England haven’t scored fewer than four goals in any of their qualification fixtures.
  • Three of the four goals England have conceded in qualification came in one game against Kosovo.
