The European Championships 2020 qualification campaign gets underway this week with one of the favourites for the competition next year – Belgium – starting their campaign with a potentially tricky trip to outsiders Cyprus.

Predictions

Belgium are currently the number one ranked international side by FIFA following an incredible few years, including last summer’s third-place finish in the World Cup.

Roberto Martinez’s side have won 20 of their last 25 matches in all competitions and are widely recognised as one of the finest teams in the sport.

However, they will need to bounce back after surprisingly not making the inaugural UEFA Nations League finals following a 5-2 loss against Switzerland in their last match.

Cyprus are badly out of form, they are without a victory in four matches and have won just once in their last 13 matches – a 2-1 home victory over Slovenia last year.

The visitors will be favourites to get off to a winning start despite not possessing home advantage, as they hold superior form and quality over Cyprus.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a 2-0 triumph for the Red Devils would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Cyprus are renowned for their strong defence, with each of their last three internationals having fewer than three goals. Belgium are usually a slick attacking outfit but are without several stars including striker Romelu Lukaku while Kevin de Bruyne is also unavailable. Two of their last three games have had two goals or fewer making this among the best online betting odds for this round of fixtures.

Belgium have kept 13 clean sheets in their last 24 matches while in the same number of games, Cyprus have failed to score on 13 occasions. Roberto Martinez’s side pride themselves on a strong defence while the hosts have a real lack of firepower, so only one team to score – Belgium – is likely.

Statistics

Head to Head
