The match is over.
Score: 3-1.

The qualification process for the 2020 European Championships get underway this week with World Cup semi-finalists Belgium playing hosts to 2018 World Cup hosts Russia, with the home side looking to go one step further than last summer and the visitors looking to improve on their impressive showing at their home tournament.

On paper this does look like it could be a tricky game for Russia to get anything out of considering how impressive Belgium can be but this Belgium squad is always capable of a slip up, something that Russia could look out for.

Belgium missed out on the Nations League semi-final following a dramatic loss against Switzerland, which was their first loss since losing to France in the World Cup semi-final.

Russia haven’t been as impressive, losing their last two games against Germany and Sweden but will be looking to this qualification stage as a good opportunity to reach another major tournament.

Belgium beat England, Panama and Tunisia in the World Cup group stages while seeing off Japan and Brazil in the knockouts, with that performance against Brazil being a particularly special one.

Despite being hosts of the World Cup, little was expected of Russia but after wins over Saudi Arabia and Spain, they were knocked out on penalties against Croatia in the quarter finals.

The home side appear to be favourites for this game judging by the talent they have in their ranks so a big win could be in order but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Russia run them close for a period of time. Belgium should pull away, though, and could win 4-1.

Betting Tips

Belgium are favourites for this game, which should come as no surprise. With Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard always on top form in these kinds of games, it wouldn’t shock anyone if either of them grab a hat trick or a brace. UniBet has them at 16/1 to win this game 4-1, one of the best bets of the upcoming international weekend.

Russia will fancy getting a goal, but Belgium’s extra quality should come through. Hazard and Lukaku are only two of Belgium’s threats, and bookies have to expect the Red Devils to score more than one – enough to claim victory. 10Bet have Belgium and BTTS at 9/5.

Head to Head

Throughout history, these two have met five times with Belgium winning three times – two times in group stages at the 2002 and 2014 World Cups – and Russia have held them to draws twice, failing to ever beat their opponents.

  • The top scorer in this fixture is a joint between Christian Benteke and Romelu Lukaku with two goals, and the only Russians on the list are Aleksey Miranchuk, Viktor Vasin and Aleksandr Bukharov.
  • Russia and Belgium have been drawn into Group I of the Euro 2020 qualifiers, coming up against Scotland, San Marino, Cyprus and Kazakhstan.
  • Belgium haven’t lost a game at home since September of 2016 when Spain beat them 2-0 thanks to a brace from David Silva.
  • The last time Russia won away from home was back in September 2018 when they beat Turkey 2-1 in the UEFA Nations League, their first win away from home since June of 2017.
