Score: 0-2.

The Euro 2020 qualifiers are played this week with favourites Germany travelling to Belarus in a game that should be, in all seriousness, a slam dunk for the four time world champions.

As fun as it would be to see an underdog claim the scalp of a world class side, the odds on that happening here are slim with Germany strong favourites for this game.

Belarus have lost their last two games against Northern Ireland and the Netherlands, with those two games ending a run of six games without defeat.

That run included two wins against San Marino and two wins against Luxembourg, with two draws against Romania sandwiched in between.

As for Germany, they’ve had a strange time since the World Cup. Losses against the Netherlands and France meant that they’re out of the Nations League chase, while wins against the Dutch, Russia and Peru have given them slight hope for the future.

In the meantime, Germany also managed to draw against the Netherlands and Serbia, so their form has been sketchy at best.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be a big a margin as many suggest. A 3-0 win will be enough to give Germany the win.

Betting Tips

The Germans are overwhelming favourites for this clash so an away win carries very little risk while it is also highly likely that they’ll get a handful of goals – 888sport have it as 27/. Belarus will be intent on giving Germany a run for their money and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action.

It doesn’t seem entirely likely that Germany won’t be ahead at the break, but this isn’t a bad bet if you have zero faith in their attackers. Belarus could easily make it a very difficult game for them before Germany eventually break them down in the second 45 minutes, with this bet rated at 9/1 by 888sport.

Head to Head

Belarus and Germany have only ever met once before, a 2-2 draw in May 2008 as Germany were preparing for Euro 2008. Other than that game, they have never played each other.

  • That game ended 2-2 with Miroslav Klose scoring the opener before a Belarus goal put Germany 2-0 up. Belarus fought back to draw 2-2 with Vitali Bulyga scoring a brace.
  • Germany had midfielder Jermaine Jones come off the bench in that game, who would eventually go on to play in the 2014 World Cup for the United States.
  • Aleksander Hleb played for Belarus that day when he was still an Arsenal player, and not really getting too involved in the game.
  • Joachim Lowe was the manager of Germany that day as he was preparing for his first tournament as head coach and clearly, he wasn’t hoping for the start he wanted with this game and eventually finishing runners up of Euro 2008.
