Venezuela vs Argentina Copa America Predictions

Copa America 2019 Quarter Finals
Venezuela vs Argentina - Copa America

The match is over.
Score: 0-2.

The Copa America knockout stages get underway this week with all eyes on an out-of-sorts Argentina, who are among the tournament favourites but stumbled through the group stages and now face a tough test against Venezuela.

Argentina have been distinctly unimpressive in this tournament despite advancing through the group stages, largely thanks to a win over tournament debutants Qatar.

Lionel Scaloni’s side crashed to a miserable two-goal defeat against Colombia while they were also somewhat fortunate to record a draw against Paraguay.

Venezuela’s campaign has been impressive to date and has slightly exceeded expectations – navigating a tricky group with five points from their three outings and yet to taste defeat.

Rafael Dudamel’s team drew with both Peru and tournament hosts Brazil before securing their place in the last eight with victory over Bolivia.

Argentina are favourites in the betting markets to progress to the semi-finals but despite their superior quality over Venezuela, they could be eliminated.

Despite not being reflected in the betting markets, Venezuela will believe they can edge out this game – a 2-1 triumph for Venezuela would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Venezuela defeated Argentina 3-1 in a friendly as recently as March and so far they have demonstrated stronger form during this tournament. Indeed, backing Venezuela to win is among the best online betting odds for this round of action. A win in 90 minutes is still somewhat of an outside bet but 10bet’s odds of 26/5 represent excellent value and well worth examination ahead of this clash.

The target man netted in each of Newcastle’s two closing matches of last season and continued that good form by netting twice in a recent 3-0 friendly victory over the United States. He is the nation’s top scorer with 24 goals to his name and Royal Panda have attractively priced him at 11/4 to add to that tally here.

Head to Head

Venezuela defeated Argentina 3-1 in a friendly clash back in March – Salomon Rondon, John Murillo and Josef Martinez were all on target, with Lautaro Martinez netting a consolation for Argentina. Indeed, Argentina have not beaten Venezuela in their last three attempts.

  • Both all-time national goalscorers – Salomon Rondon (Venezuela, 24) and Lionel Messi (Argentina, 67) will be appearing in this game.
  • Venezuela’s best ever performance in the competition was in 2011, when they reached the semi-finals before losing to Paraguay.
  • Argentina have lost each of the last two Copa America finals, incredibly both in penalty shootout defeats against Chile following 0-0 draws.
  • Despite their shaky performances, Argentina have never failed to progress beyond the group stages of the Copa America.
