Qatar vs Argentina Copa America Predictions

Copa America 2019 Qatar vs Argentina
Qatar vs Argentina - Copa America

The match is over.
Score: 0-2.

The Copa America group stage concludes this week with Argentina knowing they need to defeat Asian champions Qatar if they are to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

Argentina are hanging in the Copa America by a thread – Lionel Messi’s penalty rescued a draw against Paraguay following an opening day defeat against Colombia.

However, Lionel Scaloni’s side now must win their final match if they are to progress through to the quarter-finals, with two of the best third-placed finishers in the groups also qualifying.

Asian Cup winners Qatar have made an impressive start to the campaign in their inaugural Copa America competition – coming from two goals down to rescue a point against Paraguay and lose narrowly to Colombia.

Qatar remain above Argentina on goal difference in the group and could yet make it through themselves if they are to pick up a positive result here.

Argentina will be favourites to win this match due to their superior quality over Qatar but the Asian side are in stronger form and could yet pull off a massive upset in this game.

Argentina are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable and indeed a 1-1 draw may be a likely outcome due to the lack of form from La Albiceleste.

Betting Tips

Argentina have been dreadful through their opening two games and can count themselves fortunate to have a point and not two defeats to their name. Qatar – who won the Asian Cup – have shown that success was no fluke and have given a strong account of themselves in both matches so far. Argentina will have all the pressure in this game but their form is so poor that a Qatar double chance here is among the best online betting odds for the round of action, with 888 Sport pricing it at 29/10.

Qatar had kept six clean sheets in eight going into the tournament while Argentina had kept six in nine. This is likely to be a tense, cagey affair with Qatar happy to sit back and hit their opponents on the break. Like the previous games in this group, it is likely to be low-scoring with 888 Sport attractively pricing two goals or fewer at 21/20.

Head to Head

These two sides have met just once before at international level, when Argentina ran out 3-0 victors in a 2005 friendly.

  • The Asian Cup was Qatar’s first ever major national title – they won all seven games in the competition.
  • Argentina have lost each of the last two Copa America finals, incredible both penalty shootout defeats against Chile following 0-0 draws.
  • This is Qatar’s first ever appearance in the Copa America, as one of the invited teams from other federations – Japan are the other this year.
  • If Argentina fail to win this game, they will suffer their first Copa America group stage exit in their history.
