The Champions League returns this week with an important Group B clash between Tottenham and Internazionale on Wednesday evening in a game the hosts are slight favourites to win, with both teams gunning for one automatic qualification place.

Both these sides are going head-to-head for second spot in this group to progress through – alongside Barcelona – into the round of 16, which will get underway in February.

A late turnaround by Inter over Spurs in the opening game of the group set the tone for both sides campaign – with the Italians holding a clear points advantage in the games since.

The second round of games put Luciano Spalletti’s side in total control of their own destiny – a 2-1 win at PSV coupled with Spurs crashing to a 4-2 home defeat against Barcelona.

However, Inter collected just one point from their double-header against Barcelona while Spurs gathered four from their two clashes with PSV, to leave the group delicately poised going into this fixture.

The hosts will be slight favourites to win solely due to possessing home advantage, but there appears to be little difference in quality or form between the two going into the game.

These sides are evenly balanced and the pattern of the match is likely to be dictated by the closeness in quality, with a 1-1 result from the match appearing to be a likely outcome.

Betting Tips

This is the most likely outcome of this match yet this is not reflected in the betting markets – which places a victory for either side, more notably the hosts, as the most probable results. Yet the reality is these two could only be separated in the opening game by a late goal and both have shown strong form domestically this season – pitting England’s fifth best side (27 points from 12 games) against Italy’s third strongest (25 points from 12 games).

This is Mauro Icardi’s first ever season in the Champions League and he is making up for lost time, netting three goals in his opening four appearances. One of those was a world-class equalising strike against Spurs and he will look to add Wembley to the growing list of stadiums in which he has netted. He also scored in Eindhoven while bagging the potentially priceless equaliser at home to Barcelona. Already has 10 goals to his name this campaign.

Head to Head

This will be the sixth meeting between the two sides in European competition and, somewhat surprisingly, all previous five encounters have been won by the home side. Inter won 2-1 in September while the Champions League meetings in 2010 and Europa League clashes in 2013 all went the way of the hosts.

  • Tottenham have more points (27) than any other side who have been fourth after 12 games in Premier League history.
  • Coincidentally, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have more points at this stage of the campaign than any other Spurs outfit in the Premier League.
  • Inter’s recent defeat away at Atalanta ended a run of seven straight victories in Serie A, including wins over rivals Milan and Lazio.
  • The Nerazzurri’s victory in Eindhoven back in October was their first Champions League win away from home since October 2011, when they triumphed 0-1 at Lille.
