Tottenham vs Bayern Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 2-7.

This should be one of the ties of the entire group stage as Spurs, in the midst of what looks like being a crisis come up against a rebuilding Bayern Munich side who are being challenged for the Bundesliga and don’t look like Champions League contenders just yet.

By the looks of the two squads there shouldn’t be much to separate them but after Spurs’ collapse against Olympiakos last week, they will be in desperate need to get their first win on the board.

Spurs threw away a comfortable two-goal cushion in the opening group game in Greece and looked tired, laboured and unmotivated, so this could be the perfect opportunity to change the feeling around the club.

Bayern, on the other hand, made light work of Red Star Belgrade with a comfortable 3-0 win in Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Spurs recently lost away at Leicester in the Premier League and away at Colchester in an embarrassing Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat, so to beat Bayern Munich might soften some of those blows.

Bayern have got a title challenge on their hands in the Bundesliga and currently sit 2nd behind RB Leipzig, just two points off of them in top spot and one point ahead of 3rd placed Borussia Dortmund.

You could argue that neither team are favourites because their talent levels are so equal. A score draw may be the way to go in this fixture, or both teams to score in both halves.

Betting Tips

Bayern are slight favourites for this game but a high scoring draw seems to be the way to go for long odds. Spurs and Bayern aren’t too far apart and with Spurs at home it could be a factor in how their players react, and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action, with surprisingly long odds. 888sport have it as 21/2.

Spurs leading at half time only to be pegged back and settle for a draw at the final whistle? No, never in a million years… But in all seriousness, you could see Spurs taking a lead before Bayern pulling it back level in the second half with a flurry of attacks, with this bet rated at 12/1 by 888sport.

Head to Head

Tottenham and Bayern have met only four times previously in competitive competitions – obviously not counting the Audi Cup – with Spurs winning once, Bayern winning twice and the draw being the final result on one occasion.

  • The first meeting came back in 1982 when a Spurs side led by Ricky Villa and Gary Mabbutt drew 1-1 with Karl HeinzeRummenigge’s Bayern side.
  • The second fixture was the return leg of that same Cup Winners’ Cup tie, with Bayern coming out on top as 4-1 winners.
  • The next time the two would meet would be the following seasons UEFA Cup when Spurs lost the first leg 1-0 in Munich.
  • But they overturned that deficit in the second leg at White Hart Lane with a 2-0 victory with goals from Steve Archibald and Mark Falco.
