Manchester City will be hoping of landing their first ever Champions League title this season and begin their campaign with a tricky trip to Ukraine to take on Shakhtar Donestk.

Remarkably, this is the third year in a row that these two sides will compete against each other in the Champions League group stage – with City winning three and losing one of the four games to date.

Pep Guardiola’s side have underachieved in European football and were memorably eliminated from the competition last season against Tottenham in the quarter-finals.

City’s best ever performance in the competition came in 2016, before Guardiola took the reins, when they lost out to Real Madrid at the semi-final stage.

Shakhtar won just one of their six group stage games last season – at Hoffenheim – and were eliminated after collecting just six points.

The visitors will be favourites to make a winning start here despite not possessing home advantage, as they hold superior form and quality over Shakhtar.

The away side are favourites to win this game and it should be relatively comfortable – a 3-1 triumph for the English champions appears a likely outcome.

Betting Tips

Shakhtar have scored 19 times across their opening six matches in the Ukrainian league while Manchester City area always prolific in front of goal and are strong favourites to win here. 888 Sport have attractively priced an away victory with both teams scoring at 33/20 and is worth more consideration.

This is among the best online betting odds as this was the outcome in both of City’s games against Shakhtar last season as they ramped up an impressive nine goals over the matches. Pep Guardiola’s men should win here comfortably and they are relentless so winning both halves is the likely outcome. 10Bet price City to win both halves at 39/20.

Head to Head

All four meetings have come in the past two years in this competition with City winning 3-0 and 6-0 last season, although Shakhtar recorded a 2-1 victory in Ukraine in 2017 when the English side had already sealed their progress through the groups.

  • Manchester City have dropped just two points across their last 18 Premier League matches – a 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham.
  • Shakhtar have not lost any of their last 35 league matches in the top flight in Ukraine – winning 30 of those.
  • Shakhtar were the last side from Ukraine to reach the Round of 16 in the competition – they were eliminated on away goals by Roma in 2018.
  • City have won 12 of their last 13 away matches in all competitions.
