Schalke 04 vs Manchester City Champions League

Pep Guardiola’s side are heavy favourites for this clash against a Schalke side who are struggling for form this season – lying in the bottom half of the German top flight.

The Gelsenkirchen-based side have disappointed domestically this season and with 13 games to go, are closer to the relegation places than the European spots.

Manchester City’s supreme domestic form is not at the level it was last season but they are still in the thick of the Premier League title race but they have lost four league matches this campaign.

City’s Champions League form has not been flawless either – they fell to a 1-2 home defeat against Lyon in the group stages and escaped with a 2-2 draw from their game in France.

The visitors will be favourites to record a victory in Gelsenkirchen despite not possessing home advantage as they hold clear superior form and quality over Schalke.

The away side are favourites to win this game and it should be relatively comfortable – a 2-1 triumph for the Premier League champions would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Leroy Sane has already found the net 11 times this season for City and will be extra motivated to face his former club. The German forward netted twice in his last Champions League outing – against another Bundesliga side, Hoffenheim. He may be the centre of attention in this game and he has proven he thrives under the spotlight, with Sane valued at 16/11 anytime at 10Bet.

City are overwhelming favourites to win this tie but they have conceded 13 goals across their last nine Champions League appearances and failed to keep a clean sheet in either of their group stage wins over Bundesliga side Hoffenheim. The hosts will be keen to give their fans something to shout about against a porous City defence but despite this, Pep Guardiola’s side should secure the victory and this is among the best online betting odds for this round of fixtures, coming in at 7/4 with Royal Panda.

Head to Head

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly given the European exploits of both clubs in European competition in recent years, these two sides have never previously met before in this competition. City did win 2-0 at Schalke in a Europa League group stage meeting between the two in 2008 – Benjani and Stephen Ireland netting the goals.

  • Schalke reached the semi-finals of this competition in 2011, before losing to City’s Manchester neighbours United – while City have only reached the last four once, in 2016.
  • City have won eight of their 13 away league matches this season, drawing twice and losing on three occasions – more points than they dropped on their travels in the entirety of last season.
  • Schalke have yet to draw a home league games this season – they have won four and lost six of their Bundesliga matches at the VELTINS-Arena.
  • The German side have not reached this stage of the Champions League since the 2014-15 campaign and crashed out despite an historic 3-4 victory at Real Madrid due to a 0-2 home defeat in the first leg.
