Both Real Madrid and Roma have the opportunity to confirm their place in the Champions League round of 16 if they pick up a positive result at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday evening.

Real Madrid and Roma both have nine points from their first four Champions League matches and a draw would be enough to see them both through the knockout rounds if CSKA Moscow fail to beat Viktoria Plzen in Russia.

It’s been a difficult first few months of the campaign for Real, who disposed of Julen Lopetegui’s services last month after a woeful start to the season in La Liga.

But under new boss Santiago Solari, Los Merengues’ form has picked up, with four straight victories in all competitions, including a 5-0 hammering of Viktoria Plzen in their last Champions League outing.

Roma’s domestic form has also picked up of late, but the Giallorossi still find themselves 15 points off top spot in Serie A despite just one loss in ten in all competitions.

Eusebio di Francesco’s side fought to a 2-1 victory in Moscow last time out to stretch the gap between themselves and CSKA but a slip-up at the Stadio Olimpico could open the door again for the Russians.

A draw would be a good result for both teams and would leave CSKA, at best, needing to go to the Santiago Bernabeu and win on the final matchday. A 2-2 draw is possible.

Betting Tips

Roma have only lost once at the Stadio Olimpico since April and underlined their dominance on their own patch with an easy 3-0 win against CSKA Moscow there last month. Real Madrid may be on the up again but haven’t come up against any side near the standard of Roma since Solari took over less than a month ago.

Real Madrid have thumped 15 goals past opponents since their humiliation at the hands of Barcelona in El Clasico. Striker Karim Benzema looked to be almost back to his best before the international break, having found the back of the net four times in four games. Solari’s men have also scored in both the first and second half in three of their last four, too.

Head to Head

Real Madrid eased to a 3-0 win in the reverse fixture between these teams back in September, with Isco, Gareth Bale and Mariano Diaz getting on the scoresheet. The Spanish giants also came out on top the last time these two clubs met in Italy, winning 2-0 in the first leg of a Champions League round of 16 meeting in 2016. The last time Roma beat Real at the Stadio Olimpico was in February 2008 when David Pizarro and Mancini struck after Raul had given the visitors an early lead.

  • Real Madrid have won their last three matches against Roma without conceding a single goal.
  • Only Lionel Messi has scored as many Champions League goals as Roma’s Edin Dzeko this season (5).
  • No player has assisted more goals in this season’s competition than Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini with three assists.
  • Toni Kroos has completed 414 passes in four Champions League matches – 78 more than his nearest challenger, Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets.
