Real Madrid vs CSKA Moscow Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 0-3.

The Champions League group stage concludes this week with a Group G clash between Real Madrid and CSKA Moscow on Wednesday evening in a game the hosts are heavy favourites to win and have already sealed their progression to the last 16.

Madrid have already sealed their progress to the Champions League last 16 – and will now be seeking to win the group – while basement side CSKA Moscow can still secure a Europa League spot.

The Spanish side have won four of their five group games to date with their only blotch a 1-0 loss at CSKA Moscow earlier in the group.

Madrid have won each of the last three Champions League tournaments although the losses of boss Zinedine Zidane and star forward Cristiano Ronaldo have been significant.

Both sides are suffering poor domestic form this season – Madrid have already lost five league games and sit fifth in La Liga while CSKA are third in the Russian top flight, seven points from league leaders Zenit.

The hosts will be favourites to make it five European wins out of six due to possessing home advantage, superior form and quality over the Russian side.

The home side are favourites to win this game and it should be a comfortable victory – a 3-1 triumph for the European champions would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

CSKA have lost three successive Champions League games and comfortably were defeated in their last away trip – a 3-0 loss at Roma. By contrast, Madrid have won three matches in a row in the competition and are on course to top the group. It is clear the European champions are strong favourites for this game, with a half time/full time bet offering strong value.

This is one of the best betting odds available this week because the markets have given undue weight to Madrid’s goalscoring potential. CSKA have conceded just nine goals in five group games thus far – including keeping a clean sheet against Madrid already in this group – and just seven in 16 league games, while Madrid have let in just two goals in this competition so far this campaign. This bet still allows room for two goals or fewer and offers great returns, while there is no huge demand on the hosts to win this clash.

Head to Head

Nikola Vlasic scored the only goal of the game as the Russian side stunned Madrid 1-0 back in October. The two have previously played each other on two occasions in Europe, in the last 16 of the 2012/13 campaign. CSKA held the Spanish side to a 1-1 draw in Moscow before they fell to a 4-1 defeat in Madrid.

  • Real Madrid have won the European Cup on 13 occasions, more than any other club, including three in a row and four of the last five editions.
  • Madrid have lost just one of their last 24 home games in the Champions League – a 1-3 loss at home to Juventus back in April.
  • CSKA Moscow have comfortably the best defence in the Russian top flight, conceding just seven goals in 16 outings.
Despite still sitting third in their league, CSKA have now only won three of their last 11 matches across all competitions.
