Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool will try to claim a priceless victory when they meet in the Champions League at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night as they each try to emerge from a congested Group C.

Red Star Belgrade’s victory over Liverpool on matchday four really put the cat amongst the pigeons in Champions League Group C, with just two points separating all four teams with two fixtures apiece left to play.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will need to pick themselves up from their Serbian disappointment if they are to qualify and will attempt to replicate their domestic form which has seen the Reds keep pace with Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Liverpool will certainly need to be at their best as they head to the French capital to face Paris Saint-Germain, who have won eight and drawn one of their games at the Parc des Princes so far this season.

PSG have only lost once so far in this campaign – in the reverse fixture against the Reds at Anfield – and will be out for revenge on Wednesday night.

If Liverpool win, their place in the round of 16 will be confirmed so long as Red Star Belgrade don’t beat Napoli in Italy, while PSG will be out if they lose and the Partonopei win.

It should be an exciting, intriguing match in Paris with the stakes high for both teams. It’s a difficult one to call but there will be goals, with PSG perhaps emerging as 3-1 winners.

Both of these teams have the luxury of selecting from an abundance of attacking riches for Wednesday’s game. PSG, who have hit the back of the net 28 times in their last seven home fixtures, can call upon Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe. Liverpool, meanwhile, are built for these huge European nights and the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah could thrive on the space left by the aggressive hosts.

Looking at the final set of fixtures, a draw may not be a disastrous result for either PSG or Liverpool – particularly the latter. A point apiece would heave the pressure onto each side’s last games. The French champions head to Red Star Belgrade, where they’ll be confident of getting a win despite Liverpool’s humbling there. And the Reds host Napoli at Anfield – where a raucous atmosphere will greet the Italians.

Head to Head

The reverse fixture at Anfield was a thriller, with Paris Saint-Germain coming from two goals behind to level the scores, only to see Roberto Firmino make it 3-2 to Liverpool in injury time. The only other time these two clubs have met was in the semi-final of the Cup Winners’ Cup in the 1996-97 season. PSG won 3-0 at the Parc des Princes and Liverpool couldn’t quite turn the tie around in the second leg at Anfield, winning 2-0. PSG went on to lose in the final to Barcelona.

  • Only Manchester City (12) have scored more goals than Paris Saint-Germain (11) in this season’s Champions League.

  • Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar has had 11 shots on target in this season’s competition, with only Roma’s Edin Dzeko (12) making the opposition goalkeeper work more often.
  • Nathaniel Clyne will make his 100th appearance for Liverpool if he features in Wednesday’s match.
