Porto vs Roma UEFA Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 3-1.

The second legs of the Champions League knockout games are played this week although with this fixture in particular holding a lot of intrigue. Roma, with their one goal advantage, head to Portugal to face a Porto team who are looking to capitalise on the away goal that they picked up in Italy.

With the game slightly in Roma’s advantage they will probably be slight favourites but looking at the league form of both teams, this could be the tightest game of the whole last 16.

Porto come into this game as favourites for Liga Nos, going head-to-head once again with rivals Benfica and other than their loss against Roma, haven’t lost a game in the league since October.

Roma, on the other hand, are chasing down a Champions League spot in Serie A and have picked up their form in recent weeks, sitting just one point out of the coveted top four.

Porto finished top of their group after winning all but one of their games against Schalke, Lokomotiv Moscow and Galatasaray.

Roma did well to barely get out of their group, finishing second to Real Madrid but also losing on the final round of group stages fixtures away at Plzen.

The away side are slight favourites to win this game although it may not be as convincing as some fans may think it could be. Roma have been notoriously inconsistent away from home this season, so a 2-1 win in favour of Porto wouldn’t be the biggest shock in the world.

Betting Tips

Roma will be seen as favourites for this clash so an away win will be the more favoured bet, but a home win would be just as likely given the two teams, while it is also highly likely that both teams will score. Roma know that a draw is enough to send them through and that could be all it takes to give Porto the impetus to attack freely, knowing they can hit Roma at almost any time, and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action.

These are lengthy odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect, due to the result earlier this month and the form of the two teams. Home advantage should significantly shift the momentum in this game in favour of the Portuguese club and the scoreline being level at the break before Porto pull away for the win in the second half after weathering whatever storm Roma through their way is a likely outcome.

Head to Head

Excluding the first leg, these two have met in two previous ties in the past, with Porto coming out victorious on both occasions. Porto eliminated Roma in the playoffs a few seasons ago while back in 1981, Porto won in the last 16 of the Cup Winners’ Cup.

  • Porto have only lost once at home all seasons in all competitions, a shock 2-3 loss against Vitoria Guimaraes.
Roma’s away form in Serie A is nothing short of terrible, winning five, drawing four and losing four, scoring just 19 goals but conceding a lowly 15 in the process.
  • Earlier in the Champions League group stages, Porto didn’t drop a single point at home with their only draw being away at Schalke. At home, they won all their games with a combined score of 8-2.
  • The Italians weren’t as fortunate in their group, losing three and drawing three, scoring nine and conceding seven.
