Champions League Quarter Final Porto vs liverpool
Porto vs Liverpool

The match is over.
Score: 1-4.

The second legs of the Champions League quarter-finals take place this midweek with Portuguese champions Porto hoping to turn around a two-goal deficit against in-form Liverpool in a game which could potentially be much closer than initially anticipated.

Liverpool lead 2-0 from the first leg at Anfield, a game where they took control early on and where both sides later missed a series of opportunities.

Porto are firmly the underdogs in terms of progression through to the last four but did turn away a first leg deficit in the Round of 16 against Roma, defeating the Italian capital club at home.

Liverpool’s victory at Bayern Munich in the Round of 16 was their first victory outside of England in six attempts – and they had lost the previous five, including three group stage games this season.

The winners of this tie will face the victors of Manchester United against Barcelona in the last four of the competition.

The visitors will be slight favourites to continue their run of victories despite not possessing home advantage, as they hold superior form and quality over Porto.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may pan out differently – a 2-1 for the Portuguese side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

The Portuguese side are outsiders in the betting markets to win the match but Liverpool have lost five of their last six European matches that have not been held at Anfield while Porto have won 20 of their last 22 home matches in all competitions. Porto have also won all four of their home matches in the Champions League this season, putting this among the best online betting odds for this round of fixtures. 888Sport make Porto 3/1 to win.

Linked into the previous bet, the odds multiply when you combine Porto winning on the night with both teams scoring. Porto have kept just two clean sheets in their last eight games and none in their last seven in the Champions League. The Reds are likely to score but it may not be enough to save them from defeat against a team who are aware they must score three times or more to stand a chance of progression.

Head to Head

Prior to last week’s 2-0 win at Anfield, the two clubs also met in the Round of 16 of the same competition last season. Liverpool secured a 5-0 triumph in Portugal before a goalless encounter at Anfield.

  • Porto currently sit second in the Portuguese top flight, behind league leaders Benfica on goal difference only.
  • Liverpool are top of the Premier League but have played one game more than second-placed Manchester City, who trail them by only two points.
  • Porto have not reached the semi-finals of the Champions League since winning the competition in 2004.
  • Liverpool last lifted the trophy in 2005 and were defeated 3-1 by Real Madrid in last season’s final.
