Plzen vs Roma Champions League Predictions

Plzen vs Roma Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 2-1.

Viktoria Plzen will try to secure Europa League football in the New Year when they welcome already-qualified Roma to the Doosan Arena in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Viktoria Plzen are well-placed to finish ahead of CSKA Moscow – who travel to Real Madrid in their final match – with both teams sat on four points and the Czechs having a superior head-to-head record.

Plzen stunned CSKA by winning 2-1 in Russia last month – a result that leaves their fate in their own hands going into the last matchday.

However, Pavel Vrba will be keen to avoid a repeat of the result the last time one of Europe’s juggernauts came to town, when Real Madrid hammered his team 5-0 a month ago.

The pressure is off for Roma who have already through to the round of 16 but can’t finish top of Group G, despite being only three points behind Real, having lost to the leaders twice already.

Roma, who lag behind the chasing pack in seventh place in Serie A, are without a win in three matches in all competitions and will expect to end that run in the Czech Republic.

The Italians have already smashed Plzen once and, though Vrba’s men have more to play for this time around, it could be a comfortable 2-0 away win.

Betting Tips

Plzen have been on the end of two five-goal thrashings in this season’s Champions League and have kept one clean sheet in their last five at home in all competitions. Real Madrid will be expected to beat CSKA Moscow at the Santiago Bernabeu and if they do so in handsome fashion then news will likely filter through to the Czechs, rendering the football played at the Doosan Arena as academic.

Just two of the last nine goals that Roma have scored have come before the half-time interval in matches. Should the hosts find out that CSKA are being soundly beaten in Madrid at the break on Wednesday, then they will be less motivated in the second half. Head to Head

Roma slammed five past Plzen at the Stadio Olimpico in October, with Edin Dzeko scoring a hat-trick. The two teams also met in the Europa League in the 2016/17 season, drawing 1-1 in the Czech Republic before the Italians emerged as 4-1 winners in the second leg.

  • Viktoria Plzen are unbeaten at home against Italian clubs, having faced Roma, Milan and Napoli (D2 W1).
  • Roma have never won in the Czech Republic, losing their only other match in the country 2-0 to Slavia Prague in 1996.
  • Roma striker Edin Dzeko has scored five goals in his last three matches against Plzen – three for the Giallorossi and two for Manchester City.
  • Roma have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League for the seventh time in the last 12 years.
