The match is over.
Score: 2-2.

Last season’s runners up and last minute masters Tottenham Hotspur kick start their campaign with a tricky and testing tie against Greek club Olympiakos, who are no slouches and should not be underestimated in the slightest.

On paper, you’d expect Spurs to win this one with ease but given their start to the season and the atmosphere they’ll walk in to in Greece, this is far from an easy tie.

Olympiakos have won their opening two games in the Greek Super League so far this season, winning both games (one at home, one away) by the score 1-0.

Spurs, on the other hand, have had an iffy start. They come into this one off the back of a home game against Crystal Palace and with quite a few key players on the injury list as well.

The Greek side had to beat Viktoria Plzen, Basaksehir and Krasnodar in the qualifying rounds to reach the group stages.

Both clubs were drawn into Group B with Bayern Munich coming out of pot one and Red Star, who beat Liverpool in this competition last season, the fourth and final side out.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be a big a margin as many suggest. A 2-1 win could be in order for the London club although it will not be easy in any sense.

Betting Tips

Spurs will be favourites going in to this game, as you’d expect, but it is relatively unlikely that they’ll blow the Greek side away. But while Olympiakos will be determined to make a splash and a statement in the Champions League, you’d still fancy a strong Spurs team to do the business and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action. 888sport have 2-1 Spurs as 7/1.

It may seem unlikely that Olympiakos will be leading in this game but bear in mind that Spurs will always have the tendency to go into the break behind after a slow start, maybe even if the Greeks get an early goal to liven things up a bit before Spurs come out in the second half and take them to town and end up winning, with this bet rated at 22/1 by 888sport.

Head to Head

Olympiakos and Tottenham have only ever played each other twice before, both times in European competition, back in 1972 with both sides winning one game each.

  • Spurs won the first game 4-0 in the old UEFA Cup thanks to goals from Martin Chivers, Ralph Coates and a brace from Jimmy Pearce.
  • Olympiakos took the second game 1-0 despite going out 4-1 on aggregate, despite Tottenham fielding the same line up.
  • Olympiakos have a decent record against clubs from North London, beating Arsenal four times while losing to them four times as well.
  • The most recent win came in 2015 when they won 3-2 at the Emirates in the Champions League group stage before losing the reverse fixture a few months later.
