The Champions League returns this coming week with an important Group F clash between Manchester City and Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday evening in a game the hosts are strong favourites to win.

Manchester City have recovered from a terrible start in the Champions League to take control of the group.

An opening day loss at home to Lyon has been forgotten about with impressive victories away to both Hoffenheim and Shakhtar Donetsk.

That result has left the Ukrainian champions in a tricky situation in the group, sitting joint bottom alongside Hoffenheim on just two points each – three behind Lyon.

This is a tournament which City are intent on winning after falling disappointingly at the quarter-final stage last season when eliminated by Liverpool.

Whilst Shakhtar reached the last 16 stage last season, star sales and injuries this time round make a repeat of that achievement unlikely.

City will be focused for this game as they still have work to do in order to qualify from this group while Donetsk do not travel well, with just one victory in seven defeats in their last nine European away matches.

A 3-1 home victory for Pep Guardiola’s side appears to be the most likely outcome in this fixture.

Betting Tips

There is little value in City winning the match outright due to their record over the past 18 months so betting on the hosts to win each half offers significantly better value. City have already achieved this feat on nine separate occasions this season.

11 goals have gone in across Shakhtar’s three Champions League group games to date while three or more goals have flown in across eight of their nine seven matches. City meanwhile have already netted a remarkable 38 goals this campaign.

Head to Head

This will be the fourth meeting between the two sides in the space of 14 months, with City running out 2-0 victors in Manchester last year before losing 2-1 in Ukraine. However, Pep Guardiola’s side breezed to a 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture last month.

  • Shakhtar Donetsk sit five points clear of Dynamo Kiev at the top of the Ukrainian Premier League table, dropping just five points in 13 league games to date.
  • The Ukrainians were one of just five teams to defeat City last season, with a 2-1 group victory in Eastern Europe.
  • Manchester City have never won the Champions League, with their 2016 semi-final defeat to Real Madrid their best ever finish in the tournament.
  • Last season’s last 16 qualification from Shakhtar was their first appearance in the knockout stages since 2015.
