Champions League Quarter Final Manchester United vs Barcelona
Manchester United vs Barcelona Champions League

Score: 0-1.

The Champions League gets back underway this week with the first leg of the quarter-final stage being held. This is one of the most intriguing match-ups in the last eight with Spanish champions Barcelona among the favourites to lift the competition next month.

Manchester United sealed their place in the last eight in memorable circumstances with their Round of 16 victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Marcus Rashford’s last minute penalty sealed a remarkable comeback for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, who lost the first leg 0-2 at Old Trafford before a stunning turnaround with ten first-team players absent.

Barcelona’s progress through to this stage was a little more serene, recording a 5-1 aggregate victory over Olympique Lyonnais although they were held to a 0-0 draw in France.

Ernesto Valverde’s side crashed out at this stage of the competition last season in harrowing circumstances, blowing a 4-1 lead over Roma to crash out on away goals.

The visitors will be favourites to continue their strong form this season in this match despite not possessing home advantage, as they hold superior form and quality over United.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be that comfortable – a 0-0 draw would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Barcelona have won just three of their last 11 away fixtures in the Champions League and none in their last six which have been in the knockout stage of the competition. This is an outcome which both sides would settle for – despite the visitors being favourites for the tie – and is among the best online betting odds for this round of fixtures. 888Sport price the draw at 13/5.

Barcelona have scored just one goal in their last six Champions League knockout matches away from home – Lionel Messi’s strike in a 1-1 draw at Chelsea in last season’s competition. Manchester United by contrast have scored just one goal at home in the Champions League in their four attempts this season – Marouane Fellaini’s late header against Young Boys Bern. No on BTTS is 6/5 at 10Bet.

Head to Head

Each of the last two meetings between the sides have seen Barcelona victories in Champions League finals – in the 2009 and 2011 editions. United defeated Barcelona 1-0 on aggregate at the semi-final stage of the 2008 tournament, their last victory in the competition.

Manchester United are at this stage of the tournament for only the second time in the past eight years and the first since 2014 – when they were managed by David Moyes and eliminated by Bayern Munich.
Barcelona have been knocked out at the quarter-final stage of the competition in each of the past three seasons – against Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Roma.
The Blaugrana have won just three of their last 11 Champions League fixtures away from home and none of their last six at the knockout stage of the competition.
Manchester United’s last home win in the Champions League in the knockout stage was a 3-0 defeat of Olympiakos in March 2014.
