Man City vs Schalke UEFA Champions League

Score: 7-0.

The second leg of the Champions League last 16 games are played this week although there is little doubt over who the favourites are for this tie, with Premier League champions Manchester City holding an advantage from the first leg over Bundesliga side Schalke.

After the first leg in Gelsenkirchen, City come into this game as favourites after their 3-2 win, and if City are complacent then there could be another close encounter. But Pep Guardiola’s side have more firepower, and this is the time they need to use it.

Schalke will go into this game as underdogs due to the first leg and their terrible domestic form, but as the first leg showed any piece of luck could go in favour of the Germans – they might start the second leg with a deficit but it is only one goal. It’s City’s three away goals that are the real concern, making a difficult task all the more complicated, as Schalke need to score and not concede.

City are aiming to win the Champions League for the first time in their history and know that now is as good a season as ever to get the job done, and the players seem to feel this way to. Their comeback from a 2-1 deficit in the first leg is the kind of stuff that could make City the favourites for the Champions League.

Schalke’s poor Bundesliga form may be a glaring concern for this season, but they were quite impressive in the group stages, finishing second in a group containing Porto, Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow.

City, on the other hand, showed their might in their group finishing top ahead of Lyon, Shakhtar Donetsk and Hoffenheim despite losing at home to Lyon.

Betting Tips

City are overwhelming favourites for this clash so a home win carries very little risk while it is also highly likely that Pep Guardiola’s men will be in the mood for a thrashing, perhaps a 4-0 win. Schalke will be intent on City a scare and a test, while this bet is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action.

These are average odds for an outcome which is more probable than they reflect, due to the result earlier this month distorting the likelihood of any significant comeback from Schalke. Home advantage should significantly shift the momentum in this game in favour of City, while it’s also possible to see them in second gear during the first half before running riot in the second 45 minutes.

Head to Head

Excluding the first leg, these two have met three times prior in the UEFA Cup and in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Goals from Benjani and Stephan Ireland saw City beat Schalke in 2008 while the two traded wins in the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970, with City running out 6-2 aggregate winners.

  • City have won each European fixture they’ve played when winning the first leg away from home, with that happening nine times.
  • City have reached the last 16 of the Champions League every season since 2013-14, but have only won two of their previous five games at this stage.
  • The visit of Schalke is City’s third game in a row against teams from Germany – their last group stage game was against Hoffenheim.
  • Schalke have been eliminated in the last 16 in their last three Champions League campaigns.
