With Group F still wide open, Manchester City will be looking for revenge against Lyon in order to secure safe passage into the next round of the Champions League.

Lyon provided one of the biggest shocks on the opening round of group stage matches in this season’s Champions League when the beat the Premier League Champions Manchester City at the Etihad.

Though it is unlikely they will pass up the opportunity to win, which will see them progress to the last 16 should Juventus beat Valencia in the group’s other game.

It has been a frustrating run since, drawing their next three games, conceding late in back to back games against TSG Hoffenheim.

They are still in control of their destiny in group F, but as anyone can still qualify, they cannot afford to let any more wins slip.

Manchester City have begun to look more look like the Champions League favourites they were touted as at the start of the season. A 6-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in their final game has put them top of the pile in group F, and as they top the Premier League table too, life is rosy.

But Lyon have already shown they can upset Pep Guardiola’s side once, and many produce another shock in a thrilling 3-2 win.

Betting Tips

Lyon games guarantee goals and entertainment. Their four UCL matches have seen 17 goals,
Manchester City are just as free-scoring, hitting Southampton and Shakhtar Donetsk in back-to-back games, before beating city rivals Manchester United 3-1. Win or lose, there will be goals.

Despite securing a scalp against their English opponents this season, odds are still heavily against Lyon getting a win on their own patch. A heavy loss to PSG is the only defeat they have sustained in 14 games.

Manchester City are as difficult a side as they may face in the Champions League this season, but having bested them once, they may be confident enough to do it again in front of their own fans.

Head to Head

Lyon and Manchester City have only faced each other once in all competitions, the aforementioned 2-1 win earlier in the group stage.

Lyon’s record against English opposition is not the greatest, having played against Manchester United, Everton, Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forrest in competitions such as the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Cup and Cup Winner’s Cup.

Overal, they have only won two of their nine home games, and six in 19 total games.

Man City played Monaco in a thrilling encounter in the Champions League Round of 16 in 2017, losing 6-6 on aggregate.

They had better luck the year before, beating Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter finals 3-2 on aggregate.

  • Lyon are unbeaten in their last seven Champions League games (W2 D5); only once before have they had a longer such run in the competition, going 14 games without defeat between December 2004 and March 2006.
  • Lyon’s Nabil Fekir has been directly involved in four goals in his three Champions League games this season (two goals, two assists); he wasn’t involved in any in his first five appearances in the competition prior to this campaign.
  • 23 of Lyon’s last 27 Champions League goals have been scored by French players.
  • But only Bayern and Schalke (1) have conceded fewer goals than Lyon (2) this season.
  • Manchester City midfielder David Silva has scored three goals in the 2018-19 Champions League, his best ever tally in a single season in the competition.
