Champions League Quarter Final Liverpool vs Porto
Liverpool vs Porto UEFA Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 2-0.

The first leg of the Champions League quarter finals get underway with a repeat of a fixture from last season’s knockout round as Portuguese giants FC Porto travel to Anfield to face last season’s runners up Liverpool.

Most people will have a good idea of who they favour in this tie but the reality is, Liverpool may have their focus on the Premier League, and that could allow Porto a moment to steal a good result.

Liverpool haven’t lost at home in any the Champions League or Premier League, conceding just twice in Europe at home this season, so the key to a good result will obviously be their defence.

Porto have conceded five goals on the road in Europe’s elite competition this season and lost against Roma in the Stadio Olimpico in the last round 2-1.

Liverpool beat Napoli, PSG and Red Star at home in the group stage while drawing with Bayern at home before knocking them out in the last 16 after their uneventful 0-0 draw at a rather quiet Anfield.

Porto, on the other hand, drew with Schalke away in the first game of the group stage before beating Lokomotiv Moscow and Galatasaray to round off their travels in the group stage, but all relevant bookmakers expect the Liverpool win.

The home side will be seen as strong favourites for this game and could record their fifth win in a row at home in all competitions but it won’t be by a huge score line. 2-1 or maybe 3-1 may be the best results to pick from because this Porto side are much improved from last season.

Betting Tips

The Liverpool win is the safe bet but adding in a correct score of 2-1 is where the value lies. The Reds have greater quality but more on their plate, and Porto will want to avenge last season’s defeat, so the score gap might not be as big as some are predicting. 888Sport have 2-1 to Liverpool at 15/2.

Again, these are decent odds for something that isn’t too unlikely to happen. If Liverpool’s players are a bit tired and a bit mentally worn out, Porto could take advantage of this and if they take a lead in the first half before Liverpool get one back before the break before then going on to steal the win (again) then maybe this bet doesn’t seem too bad, with it rated at 16/5 by 888sport.

Head to Head

Porto have never beaten Liverpool in a competitive competition before, with the Reds winning three games and three draws being played out with an aggregate score of Liverpool 12-2 Porto

  • The last two wins for Liverpool have been 5-0 (in 2018) and 4-1 (in 2007) with Sadio Mane scoring a hat trick in the 5-0 win and Fernando Torres scoring a brace in the 4-1 win.
  • The only two Porto players to have scored against Liverpool have been Lisandro Lopez and Lucho Gonzalez, both of whom scored against the Reds in the 2007 Champions League group stage.
  • Domestically, Porto are on a run of three straight wins after beating Braga, Maritimo and Feirense, bouncing back well from their 2-1 loss against arch rivals Benfica at home.
  • Liverpool have lost just once at home in all competitions (unbeaten in Premier League and Champions League) with their only defeat coming in the EFL Cup against an Eden Hazard inspired Chelsea.
