Liverpool vs Barcelona Champions League Semi Finals Leg 2/2
Liverpool vs Barcelona Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 4-0.

The second leg of the Champions League semi-finals get underway this week with Liverpool facing a mountain to climb against a formidable looking Barcelona outfit, inspired by the great Lionel Messi.

This looks like it could be a bridge too far for the Reds but it could also be one of those famous Anfield European nights if they can grab an early goal and put Barcelona under pressure from the off.

The home side will have the Premier League title race at the back of their mind and after losing yet another away game in the Champions League, it may not exactly be the Liverpool we’re used to seeing at full energy.

Barcelona are looking to seal yet another potential treble with La Liga already confirmed and the Copa del Rey also at their fingertips, with a win in this game putting them close to the three trophies.

Liverpool have lost away at PSG, Napoli and Red Star before losing to Barcelona last week, while they’ve beaten Bayern Munich and Porto away and all but Bayern at home.
Barcelona will be favourites to go through considering their big advantage and have won all but two games away from home, picking up draws against Inter and Lyon.

The away side are favourites to win this game although it may not be a big a margin as many suggest and certainly no repeat of the first leg – a 2-1 triumph for Barcelona or a 2-2 draw would appear a likely outcomes from it.

Betting Tips

Barcelona are more than favourites to advance from this tie but the result on the night may be different, and a 2-2 draw could be on the cards – 888sport have it as 15/2. Liverpool will give it their all for this game and will probably score at least once, while Barcelona look unstoppable to contain when Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez get involved, so a goals galore game would be a good bet.

Considering how good Barcelona are going forward, to see this bet at 10/1 is rather surprising. This is rather good odds for a score line that does look rather likely, and you could definitely see Barcelona taking an early lead before Liverpool get back into the game before Barcelona eventually run out winners and advance to the final, with this bet rated at 10/1 by 888sport.

Head to Head

In nine games, Liverpool have only ever beaten Barcelona three times while Barcelona themselves have won three games and three draws have been played out, with six goals for the Reds and nine for the Blaugrana.

  • The last time Barcelona went to Anfield they won 1-0 courtesy of an Eider Gudjohnson goal following a 2-1 Liverpool win in the first leg at the Nou Camp.
  • Following the first leg, Lionel Messi is now the top scorer in this fixture with two goals, with Luis Suarez, Craig Bellamy and Deco behind him on one goal each.
  • The first Barcelona win in this fixture came in the 2001 Champions League group stage when the Blaugrana overturned a 1-0 Liverpool lead to win 3-1 with goals from Fabio Rochemback, Patrick Kluivert and Marc Overmars.
  • Back in 2007, Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi lined up front for Barcelona while Liverpool had Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy while Deco, Xavi, Iniest and Rafael Marquez went up against John Arne Riise, Xabi Alonso, Momo Sissoko and Steven Gerrard in the midfield.
