Lille vs Chelsea Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 1-2.

Both these sides will be desperate for points after they each lost their opening group stage match in this competition in what appears to be one of the most finely balanced groups in the tournament.

Lille began their competition in disappointing fashion as they crashed to a 3-0 loss at Ajax, last year’s beaten semi-finalists.

However, Christophe Galtier’s side have made a solid start to their Ligue 1 campaign – they have 13 points from their opening seven fixtures and sit third.

It has been a tough start to life as Chelsea manager for Frank Lampard, with their opening day 0-1 defeat at home to Valencia a notable disappointing start to their European campaign.

The Blues have also struggled for form in the Premier League to date with just eight points collected from their opening six league matches.

The visitors will be favourites to triumph here despite not possessing home advantage, nor superior form over Lille, but they have better quality in their ranks.

The away side are favourites to win this game but the reality is this is likely to be a closely-fought encounter and a 1-1 draw is a likely outcome.

Betting Tips

Chelsea have more ability and quality in their ranks but are not in form and have a managerial novice at this level. Lille have a strong home record and the Blues have only won two of their first eight games in all competitions this campaign. This is a game that is too close to call and with the draw the likely outcome, it’s one of the best online betting odds of the matchday. 888Sport price it at 5/2.

The French side are on a remarkable run of form at home – they have won eight league matches in a row at Stade Pierre-Mauroy a famous 5-1 triumph at home to Paris Saint-Germain in April. Their success is built on their home form and they are highly likely to prove formidable opposition once more at their fortress. 888Sport have Lille double chance at 3/4.

Head to Head

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly given the European exploits of both clubs in European competition, these two sides have never previously met before this season.

  • Chelsea are the current Europa League holders – having defeat Arsenal 4-1 in the final last season.
  • Lille have lost nine of their last 13 matches in the Champions League and have not featured in the competition since 2014.
  • The Blues lifted the trophy in 2012 but have not reached the last four of the competition since 2014 and missed out entirely on it last season.
  • A host of former Premier League players are on the books of Lille including Jose Fonte, Renato Sanches and Loic Remy – once of Chelsea.
