Champions League Juventus vs Atlético Madrid
Juventus vs Atletico Madrid Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 3-0.

Atletico Madrid are excellently placed to progress to the quarter-finals after a 2-0 first leg victory. However, Juve are regularly challengers for the competition and can never be ruled out of mounting a comeback.

Both these sides are among the favourites to lift the title this year and whoever progresses from this tie will be a side to avoid for all opponents in the following round.

Atleti reached the final of the competition in both 2014 and 2016, only to lose out to Real Madrid on each occasion, while Juve lost the 2015 and 2017 deciders – to Barcelona and Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side are well positioned to go through after a 2-0 first leg victory at the Wanda Metropolitano, when Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez were on target.

This is set to be an extremely well-balanced tie between two sides who lose very few matches and who are widely regarded to have the strongest defences in Europe.

The hosts will be slight favourites to win on the night due to possessing home advantage, although both teams enter the game in similar form and quality.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it will not be comfortable – a 2-1 triumph for the Old Lady would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Juve have it all to do in this clash but this will be reminiscent of last season’s quarter-final against Real Madrid, when Juve came from a 3-0 home loss in the first leg to winning 3-1 in the second leg in Madrid – losing only to a late Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.  Max Allegri’s side are renowned for coming back and winning games late.

Both these sides are highly regarded as also having the meanest defences in the competition. Juventus have 21 clean sheets in all competitions this season while Atleti have 20. This is among the best online betting odds for this round of matches with goals set to be a rarity.

Head to Head

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly given the European exploits of both clubs in European competition, these two sides have only ever met twice before this season. Only one goal went in across the two group stage games of the 2014/15 competition – Arda Turan winning the home game for Atleti 1-0 with a 0-0 draw in Turin.

  • Juve have won 11 of their 13 home matches in Serie A this season, collecting 35 points in the process – the best record in the division.
  • Juventus are the only club across Europe’s top five divisions not to have lost a league match this season.
Atletico Madrid have only been defeated in European knockout competition by Real Madrid across the past five seasons.
  • Prior to Ajax defeating Real Madrid, The only club to have knocked out either Madrid side, not from the Spanish capital, of European competition was Juventus – who beat Real Madrid in the 2015 Champions League semi-finals.
