Tottenham hope for a straightforward night in Germany as they defend a 3-0 first leg lead against Borussia Dortmund.

That was a Spurs XI without Dele Alli or Harry Kane, and one that had won the prior three games. They go to Germany in significantly poorer form, losing to Burnley and Chelsea even before hosting Arsenal in the North London derby.

Dortmund recorded a first win in five games when they beat Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, but they still shipped two goals to make it 12 conceded in six games in February. Lucien Favre’s side did score 10 in reply, but it’s an untenable situation to have to score at least three goals a game to claim a victory.

BVB need more than three to eliminate Spurs, as that would only take the tie to extra time. And if Spurs can claim an away goal, Dortmund’s task becomes even more substantial. Considering Spurs scored in all three away games in the group stage, there’s no guarantee Dortmund keep a clean sheet here, something top bookies should be wary of.

Indeed, Tottenham scored in defeat at Inter, and drew with PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona, 2-2 in the Netherlands and 1-1 in Spain. A score draw here would be a perfect result for the visitors.

Spurs might not be in the best form but then, neither are Dortmund, and Pochettino has the tactical nous to set his side up to get the result they need. A 1-1 draw would see Spurs through, and it’s a distinctly possible outcome.

Betting Tips

Dortmund have played out home score draws with Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen in recent weeks, and split five goals with Leverkusen the last time they played in front of their fans.

A good start is imperative for Dortmund and they netted the first goal against Leverkusen and Hoffenheim, so they’re capable of getting out the blocks quickly. But Spurs are patient, and scored in second halves against Inter, PSV and Barca.

Head to Head

Dortmund and Spurs have met five times, and Spurs won the last time they played at Signal Iduna.

That was back in November 2017, when Son and Kane cancelled out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s opener.

  • Tottenham have scored in all of the Champions League games this season, racking up a total 12 goals in seven games.
  • The first leg at Wembley was the third Champions League game this season in which Dortmund have failed to score – they lost 2-0 at Atletico Madrid and drew 0-0 with Club Brugge, both in November.
  • Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho won the Under-17 World Cup with England in 2017, and was part of a squad that contained two Tottenham players – defender Timothy Eyoma and midfielder Tashan Oakley-Boothe. Eyoma made his Spurs debut earlier this season, while Oakley-Boothe’s bow came in 2017.
  • Dortmund boss Favre is Swiss, while Spurs have had their own Swiss manager – Christian Gross, who was in charge in 1997-98. He took charge of 30 games, winning 10, drawing eight and losing 12.
