Bayern Munich will look to continue their recent upsurge in form when Group E whipping boys AEK Athens head to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening.

A month ago, Niko Kovac’s job as head coach of Bayern was under real threat after a four-game winless streak. Four consecutive victories have eased the pressure on the Croatian and a win on Wednesday night will ensure the German giants’ place in the knockout rounds if Benfica lose to Ajax.

AEK are staring at elimination after three consecutive defeats and another loss would eradicate all hope. The Greeks will look to frustrate their illustrious hosts and will take a small amount of optimism from back-to-back clean sheets following their defeat against Kovac’s men in Athens a fortnight ago.

Intriguingly, Bayern haven’t won any of their last three Champions League games in Munich – their longest winless home run in the competition since 2009. However, they’ve got back into the winning groove and will be far too strong for AEK. A 4-0 victory beckons.

Betting Tips

Having found some form in the last fortnight with four consecutive away successes, Bayern will be keen to put on a show for their supporters. The last time they saw their side at home ended in a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach.

Historically, the figures are on Bayern’s side too. In ten games, the Bavarians have scored 29 times. Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and others will expect to add to that tally.

Bayern are at 7/4 to win by more than three goals.

AEK Athens may enjoy an excellent away record in domestic fixtures but that has not translated to the continent in recent years. The Greeks have been kept off the scoresheet in four of their last five European fixtures, stretching back to their Europa League campaign last season.

Marinos Ouzounidis could not turn around that statistic in Amsterdam in September, with AEK losing 3-0 to Ajax their only away game in this season’s competition so far.

Bayern are yet to keep a clean sheet at the Allianz this season but they haven’t played there in almost a month.

A win and a shutout is at 13/20.

Head to Head

The reverse fixture in Greece last month was the first time that Bayern and AEK have ever met and it was the European colossus that came out on top.

After a first half in which the home side more than held their own, the visitors had to wait until the hour mark to make the breakthrough. Goals from Javi Martinez and Robert Lewandowski in a three-minute spell helped seal a 2-0 win for Bayern.

  • AEK Athens have never won in Germany, drawing in one and losing in three of their trips there.
  • Bayern Munich have never lost against Greek opposition, winning eight times and drawing twice.
  • On average, only Real Madrid (40 minutes) have spent more time in possession of the ball per game than Bayern Munich in the Champions League this season (39 minutes).
  • Robert Lewandowski needs one goal to surpass Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s tally of 30 European goals for Bayern Munich. Gerd Muller is top of the list with 66 goals.
  • Only Red Star Belgrade (14) have had fewer shots on goal than AEK Athens in this season’s Champions League (25).
