Barcelona vs Lyon Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 5-1.

Lyon go to Barcelona on the back of a goalless draw in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg, knowing an away goal could be decisive.

Bruno Genesio’s Lyon achieved a rare feat in the first leg with Barcelona – they prevented the Lionel Messi-powered Catalans from scoring in 90 minutes. Do so again and the Ligue 1 side will be on their way to the Champions League’s last eight.

Barca had recorded 14 goals in the six European games prior to going to France, scoring in each fixture of the group stage when they bested PSV Eindhoven, Tottenham Hotspur and Inter. The last three teams to stop Barca scoring in European football were Roma, Juventus and Olympiacos, putting Lyon in rare company.

Lyon though do have to score at Camp Nou, something easier said than done. Juventus failed to do it last season, as did Chelsea, and PSV and Inter this year. Tottenham scored twice, but also conceded four times. The game is on a precipice, and it genuinely could go either way.

Barca will feel confident of progression, however. They’ve not lost a home Champions League game since 2013, against Bayern Munich, and have only recorded a handful of score draws – the other result that would see Lyon progress at Barca’s expense.

A score draw is certainly possible – Lyon drew 3-3 at Hoffenheim and 1-1 at Shakhtar Donetsk, as well as scoring twice to win at Manchester City. They won’t go to Barcelona in fear of the outcome, that’s for sure.

But even if Lyon do score it’s hard to see Barca not out-scoring them in reply. Look for Lyon to score early – maybe even first – but Barca to come back and wrap up progression with a 3-1 win.

Betting Tips

Bookies shouldn’t overlook Lyon, or just assume Barca will make it through because they’re Barca – Real Madrid arguably took a similar approach against Ajax. Lyon can give Barca a scare and score first, having done so against City and Shakhtar already.

Barca can’t rely on keeping a clean sheet – that’d leave them vulnerable to a late away goal. Last time Barca played at home in the Champions League, Lucas Moura scored an 85th minute equaliser for Spurs, and if that was replicated here, Barca would be eliminated. So expect Barca to go for goals and Lyon to also get on the scoresheet.

Head to Head

Lyon have never beaten Barca in a competitive fixture. They’ve met seven times, with four Barca wins and three draws.

Prior to the first leg, their last meeting was in 2009 – a 1-1 draw at Lyon, and a 5-2 Barca win in the return.

  • Barca have scored seven home Champions League goals this season, conceding only one.
  • Lyon scored six away goals in the group stage – none of their away fixtures have ended goalless, and both teams scored in each game too.
  • Messi is the joint-second top scorer in the competition this season with six goals, level with Dusan Tadic and behind only Robert Lewandowski.
  • Lyon have drawn their last six Champions League games, one short of the record, held by AEK Athens.
