Barcelona vs Liverpool Champions League Semi Finals Leg 1/2
Barcelona vs Liverpool Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 3-0.

We’re down to the final four of this incredible Champions League campaign, with Premier League title hopefuls and last season’s runners-up Liverpool traveling to Spain to face tournament favourites Barcelona in what could be an thrilling tie.

On paper, these could be the best two sides left in the competition and some would argue this would have made an even better final, but over two legs anything can happen and given the circumstances, you just never know.

Barcelona are unbeaten in the Champions League this season, having won all but one game at the Nou Camp (drawing against Tottenham) and conceding just twice (against Spurs and Lyon).

Liverpool’s away record in the Champions League isn’t that good this season, with three losses in the group stage against PSG, Napoli and Red Star but they did change that around when they beat Munich and Porto away.

Barcelona had to beat Lyon in the last 16 and Manchester United in the quarter finals while Liverpool had tougher games against Bayern Munich and Porto.

The home side have only lost once at home in all competitions this season (against Betis) while Liverpool have lost five times away from home in all competitions (the group stage losses, Man City in the Premier League and Wolves in the FA Cup).

There probably isn’t an outright favourite in the neutral’s mind for this game but it wouldn’t be a shock to see Barcelona to win 2-1 or 3-1, with Liverpool scoring the all-important away goal.

Betting Tips

Going by the bookies, Barcelona are favourites for this clash so a home win seems to carry little risk while it is also highly likely that both teams will score given the attacking talent both teams have – 888sport have it as 43/20 when combined with the Barca win.

Lionel Messi is the key man for Barcelona and always will be until he leaves, but there isn’t any point in betting on him to be first goal scorer because it’s too likely. Instead, go for the partner in crime and former Liverpool hitman Luis Suarez to score against his former club, with this bet rated at a very good 4/1 by 888sport.

Head to Head

These two have met eight times with Liverpool getting three wins, Barcelona getting two and three draws being played out in the process, with the first game dating back to 1975.

  • That first game in 1975 was a 1-0 Liverpool win in the UEFA Cup semi final with John Toshack scoring the only goal.
  • The biggest win for either side in this fixture was Barcelona’s 3-1 win at Anfield in the Champions League in 2001 when Patrick Kluivert, Rivaldo and former Middlesbrough man Fabio Rochemback scored.
  • The last time they met was in 2007 when Liverpool advanced through the quarter finals on away goals following a 2-1 win at the Nou Camp, despite losing the second leg 1-0 at home.
  • No player in history has scored more than one goal in this fixture, with the top scorers being tied on one. You’d imagine that over two legs, someone will break that record here.
