Barcelona vs Inter Champions League

The two early pacesetters in Group B of the Champions League go head-to-head on Wednesday evening when Barcelona face Inter at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona and Inter have returned maximum points from their first two matches of this season’s Champions League, claiming a pair of wins against group opponents Tottenham Hotspur and PSV Eindhoven. If either can follow those victories up with another three points in the Camp Nou, they will be on the verge of qualification.

But Barca’s European form contrasts with their domestic performances, with Ernesto Valverde’s side having collected just three points from the last 12 available in La Liga. Meanwhile, Inter have been imperious in Serie A picking up four victories out of four fixtures before the international break.

The Catalans’ Champions League home form is fantastic, though, with 25 wins and two draws since they last lost a European match on their own turf back in May 2013. A 2-0 home win is a likely outcome.

Betting Tips

Luciano Spalletti’s Inter have been solid on their travels this season, conceding only three times in five matches and winning four of those games.

Admittedly, Barcelona represent a step-up in class from the likes of Bologna and SPAL, but the Catalans will be wary of the threat that Inter also pose at the other end of the pitch and will tighten the shackles a little when Inter head to town.

Four of the last five of the meetings between these two have seen two goals or fewer scored. There’s excellent odds of 41/20 available for another low-scoring encounter this week.

Barcelona took no time at all to get going in their last Champions League fixture at Wembley Stadium against Tottenham Hotspur, with Philippe Coutinho netting in the second minute.

In fact Barca have only failed to trouble the scorers by half-time once in their last six matches, despite their poor run of form. Contrastingly, just two of Inter’s eight goals scored on the road this season have come in the first half.

With those statistics in mind, it could be worth backing Barcelona to take a lead into half time at odds of 7/9.

Head to Head

Barcelona and Inter last met in the semi-finals of the 2009/10 Champions League. The Italians lost 1-0 at the Camp Nou but had already won 3-1 at the San Siro, meaning they advanced at the expense of the Catalans. Jose Mourinho-led Inter would go on to lift the trophy that season.

You have to go all the way back to January 1970 for the last time Inter left the Camp Nou with a victory – a 2-1 result in the last 16 of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

  • Barcelona have completed more passes than any other team in the Champions League so far (1345).
  • Inter have failed to score in five of their six meetings with Barcelona in the 21st century.
  • Lionel Messi is the competition’s top scorer with five goals in his two Barcelona appearances.
  • Inter’s Mauro Icardi has had more shots blocked than any other player in the tournament (4).
  • Marcelo Brozovic has covered the most distance in this season’s Champions League, running a total of 25.13km. Inter team mate Matias Vecino is second with 24.47km.
