Atletico Madrid vs Juventus Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 2-2.

Another group stage match that is a rematch of a game from last season as Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, without Antoine Griezmann this time, face off against Maurizio Sarri’s Italian champions Juventus in what promises to be a tactical masterclass.

Every season we see games in the Champions League that are sometimes just too close to call and this one certainly falls into that category.

Atletico come into this game off the back of three wins in a row to start their La Liga season, sitting atop the table on nine points and two points clear of Athletic Bilbao in second place.

Juve also started their season with a 100% record with wins against Parma and Napoli putting them second behind rivals Inter, but only on goal difference.

Atletico’s wins came against Getafe on the opening day, Leganes a week later and a home win against Eibar before the international break.

This could be a make or break season for Juventus with their sole goal to win the Champions League and bring it back to Turin, and a win here would be a huge statement to the rest of the competition.

Surprisingly, it may be wise to bet for a draw or a 1-0 win considering how defensively effective both sides can be but maybe Sarri’s new look Juventus will be a bit more open than last season more suspect to Madrid’s counter attacks?

Betting Tips

Somewhat surprisingly, a score draw is at 18/5 despite knowing what both teams can play like. When you consider how good both are at defending but also how capable they are at counter attacking, this will almost certainly end in a score draw. This is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action, priced at 18/5 by 888Sport.

And if you’re looking to be way more specific in your score draw bet, why not go with a 2-2 or, as it’s also known, a Desmond. It’s likely that both teams will score and the pace of the game could throw tactics out the window and force both sides to try and win it before settling on a point in the latter stages of the game, with this bet rated at 15/1 by 888sport.

Head to Head

Both these sides have picked up wins against one another before in their previous four fixtures, with Atletico winning twice and Juve winning just once, with a draw also happening on just the one occasion.

  • The first game came back in 2014 in the Champions League group stages when Atletico beat Juve 1-0 courtesy of a winner from Arda Turan.
  • The return fixture resulted in a 0-0 draw with both Juve and Atletico making it out of the group, with Juventus eventually losing the final 3-1 to Barcelona in Berlin.
  • The two faced off in the Champions League last season with Atletico taking the first leg at their new Wanda Metropolitano stadium 2-0 with goals from Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin, now of Inter Milan.
  • But Juve came back in the second leg to win 3-0 with Cristiano Ronaldo doing what he does best by scoring a hat-trick to send his former
  • Madrid rivals out and Juve through, before being knocked out by Ajax.
