Atletico Madrid vs Juventus Champions League

The match is over.
Score: 2-0.

Two sides who have reached four of the last five Champions League finals between them meet with both Atletico Madrid and Juventus among the favourites to win the competition.

Both these sides are among the favourites to lift the title this year and whoever progresses from this tie will be a side to avoid for all opponents in the following round.

Atleti reached the final of the competition in both 2014 and 2016, only to lose out to Real Madrid on each occasion, while Juve lost the 2015 and 2017 deciders – both to Barcelona and Madrid.

This is set to be an extremely well-balanced tie between two sides who lose very few matches and who are widely regarded to have the strongest defences in Europe.

Bizarrely, Atletico Madrid have not lost a European knockout tie to a team from outside the city of Madrid since 2013 while in that timeframe, Juventus are the only side to defeat Real Madrid in a knockout game – the 2015 semi-final.

This is a tie which is almost impossible predict but due to possessing home advantage, tipping Atleti to edge the first leg is the most logical approach.

The home side are favourites to win this game although it will not be comfortable – a 1-0 triumph for Diego Simeone’s side would appear a likely outcome from it.

The Frenchman has found the net in each of his last six appearances at the Wanda Metropolitano and has already hit 16 goals this campaign. Atletico Madrid have notched up a remarkable 27 clean sheets from their last 31 home matches in European football while Juventus are highly regarded as also having one of the meanest defences in the competition. This is among the best online betting odds for this round of matches with goals set to be a rarity, rated at 7/4 by Unibet.

Head to Head

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly given the European exploits of both clubs in European competition, these two sides have only ever met twice before. Only one goal went in across the two group stage games of the 2014-15 competition – Arda Turan winning the home game for Atleti 1-0 with a 0-0 draw in Turin.

  • Juventus are the only club across Europe’s top five divisions not to have lost a league match this season.
  • Atletico Madrid have not lost a home match across any competition this season – their only defeats in the league coming in away games at Celta Vigo and Real Betis.
  • Atletico Madrid have only been defeated in European knockout competition by Real Madrid across the past five seasons.
  • The only club to have knocked out either Madrid side, not from the Spanish capital, of European competition was Juventus – who beat Real Madrid in the 2015 Champions League semi-finals.
