The EFL Cup semi-finals get underway with the first legs as tournament holders Manchester City play host to third-tier Burton Albion in a game the champions are massive favourites to win. .

This has the potential to be a very lopsided semi-final matchup between the competition favourites and the side languishing in mid-table in England’s third tier.

Burton will naturally go into this game as massive underdogs, they have one just one of their last five league matches and two from eight as they sit 13th in League One.

City are aiming to retain the trophy they won last season en route to their Premier League success and are priced as favourites to lift the trophy.

Burton have defeated Shrewsbury, Aston Villa, Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough to reach this stage while City have beaten Oxford United, Fulham and Leicester City.

The hosts will be favourites to record their 10th successive victory in the competition due to possessing home advantage, superior form and quality over Burton.

The home side are favourites to win this game and it should be particularly comfortable – a 4-1 triumph for Pep Guardiola’s side would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

The England Under-21 international netted earlier in the competition for City in the 3-0 win at Oxford and is likely to be afforded another start in the competition. The 18-year-old has started all three games for City in the EFL Cup this season and will once again be keen to make an impression here. Foden to find the net is among the best online betting odds for the semi-finals.

There is little value in betting solely on Manchester City to win the game but the score-line is likely to be emphatic and as has been the case in recent weeks, they will look to take an early commanding lead in the game and push on from there.

Head to Head

These two sides have never met in competitive action before this tie, although Manchester City played the now defunct Burton Wanderers six times in the 1890s.

  • Manchester City have won their last nine games in the competition (including penalty shootouts), a run dating back to their October 2016 defeat in the competition against Manchester United.
  • Burton Albion have only had to defeat one Premier League club to reach this stage in the competition – defeating Burnley 2-1 in the Third Round of the competition.
  • Burton have the fourth worst away record in League One, with just two wins and nine points from their 12 matches on the road this season in the division.
  • Manchester City have the second strongest home record in the Premier League, with nine wins from their 10 home games this season – the defeat to Crystal Palace was the one exception.
