Stamford Bridge. Chelsea will try to overturn Tottenham Hotspur’s one-goal advantage in the second leg of this EFL Cup semi-final tie at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.

Tottenham hold a slender advantage going into the second leg after Harry Kane’s successful penalty kick earned them a 1-0 win at Wembley Stadium.

But Spurs have since been stunned by the news that Kane will be out of action until March after sustaining ankle ligament damage during their 1-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League.

The England captain is not the only absentee, with Son Heung-Min away on international duty, and Chelsea will hope to take advantage of their depleted opponents.

The Blues want to lift the EFL Cup for the sixth time in their history, having last won the tournament in the 2014-15 campaign.
But Tottenham’s trophy drought has now stretched to 11 years, so Mauricio Pochettino’s men are desperate for some silverware too.

The absence of both Kane and Son could prove to be the difference at Stamford Bridge and a 2-0 Chelsea win offers generous odds on bookmakers sites.

Betting Tips

According to 888sport, Chelsea are outsiders to qualify at odds of 6/5. However, Tottenham are severely weakened by absences and injuries and it remains to be seen whether they will reach their usual standards. In addition, Chelsea have an excellent recent record at Stamford Bridge and have lost just once there under Maurizio Sarri.

Chelsea have kept seven clean sheets in their last 12 matches at home, so it’s puzzling to see 888sport price under 2.5 goals at 49/50. With Tottenham also missing their two sharp-shooters, goals could be in short supply in West London.

Head to Head

Tottenham won 1-0 in the first leg of this tie at Wembley Stadium earlier this month, with Harry Kane smashing in a penalty kick. Spurs also beat Chelsea at home in the Premier League in November by a 3-1 scoreline. The two teams last met at Stamford Bridge in April, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side again emerging as 3-1 winners.

  • Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have met 162 times, with the Blues winning 68 and Spurs winning 54.
  • Tottenham’s Dele Alli has scored three times in his last three appearances against Chelsea.
  • Chelsea have lost just three of their last 20 EFL Cup matches.
  • Chelsea’s Eden Hazard has more assists than any other player in the Premier League this season (10).
