EFL Cup holders Manchester City defend their trophy against Premier League rivals Chelsea, with the London Blues looking for silverware to help salvage a difficult season.

Life under Maurizio Sarri started fairly well for Chelsea but when it’s gone badly, it’s gone very badly indeed. It’s a toss-up to decide what was worse – losing 4-0 at Bournemouth or 6-0 at City. The former wasn’t by as many goals but the Cherries are a side Chelsea expect to beat; the latter was confirmation of just how far they’ve fallen from the top teams in the Premier League.

The 6-0 hammering at City will live long in the memory – by the time the EFL Cup final kicks off, it will have taken place just two weeks earlier. Five places and 15 points separate the two teams in the league, although when they last met the gap looked considerably bigger.

Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick in that game and there’s no guarantee the Chelsea defence will escape their Argentine tormenter here – Pep Guardiola doesn’t always rest his best players for the more minor competitions, and Aguero was among the scorers when City beat Arsenal in last year’s final.

Even if Aguero doesn’t feature from the start, City can still call on Gabriel Jesus, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and more, so goals are not likely to be a concern. The concern will be Chelsea’s, of how to keep them out. Sarri went with David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger the last time Chelsea played City, but could opt for a different partnership here.

Top betting sites might see a close game but City will be confident of claiming the season’s first piece of major silverware, and using that winning feeling in the title fight with Liverpool. For Chelsea, the League Cup would be something Sarri could point to as a sign of progress, but probably not enough to keep his employers happy.

Another 6-0 is seriously unlikely but City should get at least two goals, and it’s hard to see Chelsea getting three. A 2-1 for City.

Betting Tips

Both teams have goals in them, with Eden Hazard the main danger for Chelsea to combat the firepower of Aguero and company. City, with 74 Premier League goals this season to Chelsea’s 45, will get more of them but both can find the net.

One of English football’s most dangerous forwards, Sergio Aguero is hitting his best form as the season comes to a close. Deciding the destination of the EFL Cup would send a signal to Liverpool.

Head to Head

Chelsea beat City at Stamford Bridge in December, with N’Golo Kante and David Luiz on the scoresheet, but City won when the sides met in August in the Community Shield.

  • City’s 2018 EFL Cup win was their fifth overall – Liverpool have the record with eight League Cup successes.
  • Aguero, Silva and Vincent Kompany were on target in last season’s final against Arsenal.
  • Chelsea last won the competition in 2015, when they beat Tottenham 2-0 in the final.
  • Chelsea also have five League Cups to their name, first winning in 1970 – five years after City’s first victory in the competition.
