Uruguay are third favourites to lift the Copa America – behind Brazil and Argentina – this summer but face a tough opening test as they take on Ecuador. Hector Gomez’s side are rank outsiders for the tournament but notoriously cause problems to loftier opponents.

Predictions

Uruguay have been on a difficult run of form since going out of last summer’s World Cup and have lost five of their last nine matches.

Oscar Tabarez’s side are among the favourites to lift this year’s tournament but will need to find more consistency and hope star striker Luis Suarez stays fit.

Ecuador are not expected to progress far in the tournament but they retain an experienced squad and with just one defeat in their last six, are a tricky opponents.

Uruguay also have much more pedigree in this competition having lifted the trophy four times, with Ecuador’s hosting of the competition in 1993 bringing their only semi-final appearance.

Uruguay will be favourites to get their competition off to a winning start thanks to their superior form and quality over Ecuador, but this game will be tight.

Oscar Tabarez’s men are favourites to win this game although it may not be comfortable – a closely-fought 1-1 draw would appear a likely outcome from it.

Betting Tips

Uruguay have kept three successive clean sheets but conversely, have failed to score in two of their past five matches. Ecuador have had similar issues with just five goals in their last six games and conceding just three in that run. These encounters are typically close, and a low-scoring draw is a likely outcome from this fixture.

Ecuador have lost just one of their past six matches and two of their last nine, while Uruguay’s friendly win over Mexico was their only notable victory in their past eight matches. Oscar Tabarez’s men are favourites for this clash but they face a stubborn opponent whom they have defeated just once in the past four attempts.
