Tottenham Hotspur vs Borussia Dortmund Champions League Predictions

Tottenham Hotspur vs Borussia Dortmund Champions League

Wednesday February 13th, 15:00

Tottenham’s latest attempt at landing a trophy to validate the enormous success of Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure – as if his record isn’t impressive enough already – resumes as they host Dortmund, who have pulled clear of Bayern Munich domestically and could be forgiven for having matters at home foremost in their minds.

It was almost six years ago that a Dortmund side coached by Jurgen Klopp met Bayern in the final of this competition at Wembley, with the Bavarians claiming a 2-1 win. A number of key figures from that Dortmund team later jumped to Bayern, giving the current state of the Bundesliga table even more meaning to the ascendant BVB.

Dortmund have so far this season capitalised on Bayern’s struggles at home while at the same time making solid progress in Europe. They came through a competitive Group A level on points with Atletico Madrid, qualifying in top spot by virtue of a better head-to-head goal difference.

Tottenham had an even tighter margin for qualification as they ended up second in Group B behind Barcelona, and only ahead of Inter in third thanks to having scored more away goals than the Italians. And even though Dortmund are top of the table in Germany, Spurs might feel they got a fortunate draw, avoiding the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Real Madrid,

Of course, Dortmund could say the same about being paired with Spurs and not, for example, Liverpool, or the resurgent Manchester United. They’ll have felt their luck was in even more so when Harry Kane was struck down with injury, but the England international could be involved here.

What is more certain is that neither side will look to shut up shop and frustrate their way to a win. Pochettino and counterpart Lucien Favre are attack-minded coaches and bookies should expect both teams to score. Tottenham can edge a tantalising encounter 2-1.

Predictions

Both of these sides have enjoyed recent strong runs of form, with Borussia Dortmund topping the Bundesliga and Atletico Madrid surging in Spain after a faltering start.

Lucian Favre’s Dortmund are unbeaten through their opening seven league games and have dropped just four points, placing them three points clear atop the standings, ahead even of the vaunted Bayern Munich.

Atletico have picked up three wins in their last four La Liga outings in a run which also included a stalemate Madrid derby, placing them just one point from the league’s summit, no mean feat when Barcelona and Real Madrid are present.

Both sides have also won each of their opening two group stage fixtures against Club Brugges and Monaco respectively, putting them in control of their group. Atleti appear a stronger side but home advantage for the Germans should ensure a 1-1 draw is a likely outcome.

Betting Tips

Tottenham scored nine and conceded 10 in their six group stage games, while Dortmund plundered 10 goals in their six fixtures. The Germans were a lot harder to score against, conceding only twice, but domestically the two teams have scored more than 100 goals between them this season. It’s 29/10 at 888Sport that they both score and Spurs win.

Son Heung-Min is hugely important to Spurs regardless of Kane’s fitness, but with Kane still a question mark, the South Korean’s responsibility grows. And he usually steps up – arguably no player in the Premier League works harder, and his reward is to have reached double figures for the third straight year. He’s 39/19 at Unibet to score anytime.

Statistics

Head to Head

Tottenham and Dortmund have met each other four times, each in the last three years. Dortmund won the first two encounters, a Europa League double-header in 2016 but Spurs have taken the last two, when they met in the group stage of the 2017-18 Champions League.

Stats

  • There’s never been a scoreless game between Dortmund and Spurs, with results of 3-0, 2-1, 3-1 and 2-1.
  • Kane and Son were on target the last time the teams met as Spurs won 2-1 in Dortmund, with current Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring for BVB.
  • Kane and Son were the scorers in the game before that, too, with the former scoring twice and the latter once. Andriy Yarmolenko, now at West Ham, was on target for Dortmund.
  • Indeed, Son has scored in three out of his four appearances for Spurs against Dortmund, as he grabbed a goal in a 2-1 Dortmund win in March 2016.
