Champions League Quarter Final Barcelona vs Manchester United
Barcelona vs Manchester United

After a 1-0 win at Old Trafford courtesy of a Luke Shaw own goal, Barcelona are 100% in the driving seat for this tie but if we’ve learnt anything about Manchester United in the Champions League this season, it’s that the tie is never over until it’s all said and done.

Barcelona will be the favourites for this game given home advantage and the 1-0 lead from the first leg, but Man United will take hope from their last win against PSG that they can pull off another shock.

Barcelona have only lost twice in La Liga this season and are still unbeaten in the Champions League too, winning six games and drawing three.

United have lost four in this seasons Champions League and have also won four too, drawing just one – against Valencia at home.

Barcelona’s wins have come against PSV, Tottenham, Inter, Lyon and Man United while United beat Young Boys of Bern twice, Juventus and PSG.

If Barcelona do manage to win this game and thus the tie, it’ll be their 19th win out of a potential 28 games across the Champions League, La Liga and the Copa Del Rey, spanning back to the beginning of December, so a United win here would really go against the form for the bookmakers.

The home side are favourites for this game but if they do manage to complete the job it won’t be by a landslide margin. A 2-0 or 2-1 win in favour of the Spaniards will probably be the best route to go down.

Betting Tips

Not many people will be backing United to go to the Nou Camp and win this game by the two-goal margin that they need, but to pick Barca to win 2-0 isn’t a bad bet at all. Of course United will give it their all in this one and won’t back down from another potentially historic occasion, but it might be too much for them on this time around.

While a Barcelona win does seem likely, the final score prediction is still up in the air. 2-0 does sound good but can you see Man United not grabbing a goal at some point? If it’s anything like the PSG game and United get an early goal, yet Barcelona do what Paris couldn’t and win the game.

Head to Head

In the 12 games that have been played between Barcelona and Manchester United, Barca have won five times, drawn four times and United have won three times, with Barcelona scoring 21 goals compared to United’s 15.

  • The first United win over Barcelona came in 1984 when Ron Atkinson’s side won 3-0 in the Cup Winners’ Cup thanks to a brace from Bryan Robson and Frank Stapleton.
  • The first leg of that 1984 Cup Winners’ Cup tie was won by Barcelona 2-0 with Diego Maradona playing for the Catalan club that day.
  • Three of the games have been European finals with two Champions League finals in 2009 and 2011 (both won by Barcelona) with the first final in 1991, when United won 2-1 in the Cup Winners’ Cup final thanks to two Mark Hughes goals.
  • The top scorers in this competition are a bit surprising with Mark Hughes leading the way with three goals followed by Rivaldo, Dwight Yorke, Hristo Stoichkov and Lionel Messi behind him on two goals each.
