Champions League Ajax vs Real Madrid
Ajax vs Real Madrid Champions League

Wednesday February 13th, 15:00

The first legs of the Champions League last-16 are played this week although there is little doubt over who will be considered favourites for this tie, with holders Real Madrid looking to hold onto their crown and looking to take a big advantage back to Spain for the second leg.

With both sides sitting multiple points off of the top of their respective leagues, Ajax and Real Madrid will be turning to the Champions League as the main focus instead of inconsistent league form.

Real Madrid will naturally go into this game as favourites having won five of their last six fixture in all competitions as they sit third in La Liga, behind Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

Ajax are coming into this fixture off the back of an impressive 6-0 thrashing of VVV-Venlo, but after a 6-2 loss away to rivals Feyenoord the week prior, they’ll need a near-miracle to win the claim the Eredivisie title off of PSV, who are currently five points ahead of the Amsterdam club.

Ajax finished second in their Champions League group behind Bayern Munich despite not actually losing a game (won three, drew three) whereas Real Madrid finished top of their group ahead of Roma despite losses against CSKA Moscow at home and away.

Madrid will be favourites for this game having not lost for multiple weeks (away to Leganes in the Copa Del Rey) and are rated at 15/1 with 888Sport to win the game 3-0, which would all but see the tie over even before the second leg.

But a 3-0 victory won’t come easily for the Spaniards as Ajax only conceded five goals in the entirety of the group stage.

Betting Tips

Madrid are favourites for this clash even though they’re the away team but due to the fact the champions are away, it makes it more likely that both teams will score. Ajax will be intent on giving their home fans a game to remember and a tie to savour and this is among the best online betting odds for this midweek round of action.

While Madrid will be favourites for this game, Ajax won’t let this one slip by them without a fight. A score draw would still hand the tie in favour of the reigning champions, but a 0-0 would still have the tie wide open.

Head to Head

Given the historic nature of these two teams, it shouldn’t be a surprise that they’ve played each other frequently in the past and in the Champions League, with Madrid winning the previous six clashes dating back to 2010. Ajax’s last win over the Spaniards was back in 1995 when Jari Litmanen and Patrick Kluivert both scored to hand them the win.

  • Madrid’s last away loss against CSKA Moscow was their first away defeat in the Champions League since losing at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspur and was their first loss in the competition since the controversial home defeat against Juventus that saw Gianluigi Buffon sent off and Cristiano Ronaldo score a vital penalty to send Madrid through on aggregate.
  • Ajax didn’t even qualify for the Champions League last season as they went out on away goals in the qualifying rounds to Nice and again had to settle for Europa League football in 2016/2017, 2015/2016, and going out in the group stages in 2014/2015.
  • Ajax are currently unbeaten at home in the Eredivise this season but have drawn two games out of their 10 matches in front of their own crowd.
  • In La Liga, Real Madrid have been mediocre to terrible away from home, losing four games and drawing two out of 11 games, so they have the right to be a bit cautious heading into this tie.
